I am an O/O and have been with Arnold since 1996. Since USX took control, some things have improved but a lot more have become worse. I like the scanning of documents to get paid for the load quicker but still takes a bit longer to get reimbursed for scales and other things. Miles have fallen off a good bit. I am dispatched out of Jacksonville, Fl but I think our load planning is taking place out of Tunnel Hill, Ga and Chattanooga, Tn. The Fleet Managers say they do not see our Pre Plans until after we accept them so they have no idea of really what is going on unless they actually press keys on their computer keyboards. In reality, it is just an excuse for someone not to really do anything that should be "Managing". They could easily be done away with as they really don't "Manage" anything.
Arnolds freight is what USX doesn't want or have been kicked out of. Arnold, Total Trans of Ms, C&C, and Smith Transport will stay as they are (running under their own names) because there are places that USX has been told not to come back to. Last year I was refused loads at 2 different places because we are associated with USX. Got the name of the shipping supervisor, turned it in, and was sent somewhere else.
QualComm: If you are an O/O, will cost you $17.50/week. Pretty darn expensive if you ask me. But, you gotta have it or can not lease on. Even if you own your QualComm, it still cost you that much.
Fleet Mangers: There are a few good ones at Arnold. Notice the word "Few". Most are just yahoo's hired out of college or off the welfare list that have some sort of knowlege of how to type. Still it goes back to just what they are managing. Most are just there to collect a paycheck and really have no idea or care about what goes on on the road.
Load Planning: You know, the mystical beast that magically produce loads for us lowly beings to haul around. They plug a truck number in and think they did a great thing. Problem with it is that most of the time they have no clue if that truck is really available or capable of getting that load or delivering it on time. PTA/ETA are just letters and numbers on a screen for them and seem not to really know or care about them. There are times that there seems to be no reason of how they do it but they know if it is toward the end of their work day they had better not have any trucks unplanned and just start plugging numbers in on loads. Then there are missed pickups and deliveries and who gets the blame, the driver does even though he sends in that he can not do the load due to what ever reason.
Arnold is just like most other companies out here. The All Mighty Dollar rules the roost and #### the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead. It isn't as good as some other places but better than others. When the USX operating system replaced what we were doing under the Arnold system, it took a while to get used to it and we are still trying to get used to some of it. Management sucks, chain of command just about no-existant, being treated like a 5th class citizen, it is all part of being a trucker.
Why am I still at Arnold? Well, I ask myself that frequently but to hear horror stories from other companies drivers I figure stick it out and hope for the best. Besides, I plan on retiring in a few years and if I make it that far, well, all the better. I have been in management with other companies and do not want to get back into it, listening to all the office whining (more than drivers do beleive it or not) got on my nerves so prefer the cab to the cubicle. -

Well I can contribute to this thread...i ran with Arnold from Sept last year to feb this year where during that time the USX merger happened...having been a company driver for several years with Werner i thought it might be a good idea to try lease driving....not bad until my lease renewal came up...and i saw the HUGE difference...on paper i was to have made $116,000 for the period between Feb/Dec...most of that which is gobbled up by weekly lease, satcom, road tax, etc...the final result of yearly takehome.....$23,000 and some change...
I think company drivers do better than that...i did enjoy the option of refusing freight if i wanted to but i am a real get'er done type of driver (ADHD I guess)...and whereas my entire experience with leasing was not too unpleasant aside from the tow company in KY outrageous $400 tow fee for under 5 miles to tow truck/trlr to delivery on breakdown..and the fact that the fees add up even when you are not running in the truck or if you take time off the lease still gets deducted as well as all the fees, just like being a company driver...
so at the end of the year my lease was up and i decided to go back to company driving...now if Arnold can do a rehire on me i might be OK... -
just as i'm getting there they send me a PRE-PLAN going NORTH. i called disp. and said i am due for hometime, thats what this load was for"
Suddenly 170 miles was too far to D-H home. SOOO i sat all weekend in the Pilot parking lot IDLING in 90+ degree temps because i didn't have the hours to run the load they gave me.
needless to say once i finally made it home a week later I told them to get bent LOL. -

I see things at Arnold are still the same. Actually I am surprised that they are still in business and that tells me that US Xpress hasn't wised up either. Oh well, some things never change.
