To be honest... I only called Spudnik as a fail safe. But they have surpassed everything I though they would be... Things were alot different there 20 years ago.

One time when I was a rookie I had a load of lumber to a place in Shiner TX. I had to turn right onto a regular street from the three lane state highway heading south through town. Of course there was construction there, so I couldn't use the middle lane. Worse, there's a water truck sitting on the right side of the street right by the intersection where I need to turn, but I had already committed to the turn before I realized it. (I mentioned I was a rookie, I think.)

There's a big guy wearing a glow vest and hard hat standing by the truck staring at me. I make some polite hand gestures to ask him to back the truck up, and he does, a little. Traffic is piling up behind me. (Remember, I was a rookie so I still cared about impeding four-wheelers at the time.)

I try to finish the turn but just notice in the little mirror something orange or red about to go under my rear tandem on the blind side. There weren't any cones there, and the parking was all plowed up, so I hadn't been too worried about running over the curb, but I stopped when I saw that. I made sure it was OK to back up a bit, the guy backed his truck another 20 feet, and I saw some kind of pipe sticking out of the ground. I was really hoping it was phone lines. I got around the corner OK and up to the lumber place about a block away.

While I was untarping the lumber, I saw flashing lights back at that intersection and then a cop talking to the big guy. Pretty soon he came to talk to me and told me it was a gas stub. But he was very nice and said the gas guy was going to look at it and let him know if it was a problem. If it was, he'd come back and talk to me some more, but he didn't think it would be a big deal.

I got the lumber off the trailer and got out of there unscathed. Every time I remember that incident, I promise to buy a six pack of Shiner beer. (Every drop is made in Shiner.) I guess my father-in-law is going to have to try Shiner Bock next time I'm in town.

And no, this was never on my DAC, because it never happened in that world.

That's great to hear, especially knowing the tough time you've had with quality employment. I can only imagine it makes the home life better too, I remember how miserable I used to be with the last couple of jobs. Now time at home is spent enjoying things with the wife, rather than resting and dreading the next time I work.

Got a call from my sister about my Aunt Aida, this weekend is going to be tree trimming, clearing out some dead fall, and getting a start on the winter pile. Had to tell her she should have e called me herself, because I'd told her when my Uncle passed that whatever she needs to call I'm an hour away.
