I stumbled on a YouTube video where there is a man using a wheel chair to get in and out of the truck because of a leg disability. I wouldn't have thought much of it, but the video has received millions of views and everyone in the comments is saying it's real.

    Hmm....

Ive run into it in the field a few times. With autos being the way they are anymore these guys can do as good a job as anyone. Plus a lot of these companys LOVE having people like this just for the PR. The fact you usually get a hard worker and near always a ton of tax breaks to offset setting up a truck for them is a huge bonus as well.

Interesting. I wouldn't think they would be able to pass the physical.

I saw a driver that couldn't use his legs. He was driving for a household goods company running teams. He had a lift to get him from the ground to the drivers seat.

You would think that. But if you think to the actual physical there is nothing on it that requires you walk. Just hearing, eyesight good lungs good heart and nothing obviously about to make you fall over.

I have no doubt they have special restrictions on the licnese such as auto only or maybe something for hand controls only. But there is nothing inheriently disqualifing for them.

There's no doubt in my mind that this guy is real. I had a coworker who became a good friend who was paralyzed from the waist down at 18 in a car wreck. Met him when he was in his early 40s. He had a car with hand controls that he drove 40 miles each way in a big city rush hour to get to work.

He worked harder rolling around on a production floor than 98% of the other supervisors. I was happy to help him get promoted to operations manager. He did not require any assistance other than an unobstructed path to maneuver.

Driving a truck is much less strenuous than what Wheels did every day. (The HR guy and I called him Wheels. Yes, to his face. He thought it was hilarious.) He was truly awesome. Sadly he passed about eight years ago from cancer. RIP Russell.

I'm suspicious. He obviously has SOME use of his legs, which makes me wonder if leg braces are more useable, and maybe the chair is just something he uses outside of work, but it made for a better video short? Regardless, I'd assume that even with an automatic, he still needs hand controls. Also, I hope he just does drop-and-hook.....
