If I had hit the bridge you KNOW they would have got it on video!

My RM GPS routed me around that street.
It has me going south on I 81 to US 60.

    I did not have your origin, but from here it is I 64 E to I 81 S to US 60 W.

In my Rand McNally "Deluxe Motor Carriers' Road Atlas"...in the low clearance locations for the state of Virginia -- the 5th line item shown is "US 11 Bus. Lexington -- north of jct US 60". It's 10'6" clear there.

That's exactly where you encountered your above-described problem. o_O

Suggestion: going forward -- if you don't already have one -- pick up a copy of the Rand-McNally trucker atlas -- & use the "low clearance" & "restricted routes" listings there as part of your trip planning.

In this case -- given the above info -- it's probably a good thing you didn't call the authorities.

You could potentially have been slapped with some unpleasant paperwork, etc.

I-81 to 60 you would have been fine. You took the business route through town.. I always use Google maps with satellite view to compare what my GPS is telling me. Although my gps doesn’t even list that address I can guarantee that It would have sent me through hell to get there.
You have to ignore what it tells you to do and chart your own course. I used to write the last few steps/turns on a note pad for once I got off the main routes.
That’s one of those lessons you really have to learn from because eventually it’ll leave you in a world of hurt.
The way you were trying to go was very congested and some tight turns.

Trying to cut a mile or two off your route going through town isn’t always best.

I would agree with you -- except he had a "spotter" (his wife).

Also: all's well -- that ends well. :D

Eh we have all made mistakes. Long as nothing got hit and nothing got damaged i dont see the issue. Though i also agree with others it was a huge risk and a ticket would have been better then some yahoo killing himself on a backing up truck in a no truck area.

Also never trust GPS. Them things are the worst. And ive found myself tempted to throw mine out the window more then once for pure stupid before.

    Glad you stopped.

I used to check with the Rand McNally paper atlas - all height restricted are listed. Still do if I'm somewhere unfamiliar.

I have stopped and physically measured a 13'4" posted with a tape measure to find it was 13'9" though.

That bridge picture in the OP looked pretty new and shiny.
Even the most recent atlas might not have the newest things listed yet.
