Keep doing what you’re doing, took me until I was 40 to finally settle down and settle in, maybe I’m just settling, who knows? I work for a company in Florida that doesn’t have the greatest reputation, but they tend to do right by me, I could make more money but for the most part I have peace of mind here which goes a long way. I honestly hope SSB is pleasantly surprised with the company transition, there’s not many guys out there like the two of you that will commit that much of their life to the trade, he’s a rare breed, he deserves a little peace in his life for the amount of it he gives up to do the job.

You might want to review this thread. Prior to the announcement of our impending doom (a.k.a. our so called partnership with Wylie) I was generally positive. Yes, I had my bad days like anyone else, but up until that announcement, I was more positive than negative. And since then, I have tried to have hope that we aren't going to go down the same path as when I was at Moore when Wylie basically bent us over, jamed it up our wazoo dry, and never gave us a pat on the butt, a kiss on the cheek or a reach around when it was over...now I see so many similarities as then with this partnership. Then, on top of that, I get a $3500+ drop in pay...please tell me how I am supposed to see any positive there...I mean other than having to pay a little less to the IRS.

@kylefitzy, about the engine load. I was just apprehensive about pulling one. Especially when I saw the ones you posted, I really didn't look forward to trying to tarp something that awkward shaped that I couldn't get on top of to roll and adjust my tarp. Mine ended up being much smaller than either of the ones you showed.

As far as securing, they sent instructions as to how they wanted it done, but the examples were for a totally different cradle. They want one end cross chained, but I have no securement points on either end to cross. I only have 4 sets of D-rings on the sides that are very close to the deck and very close to the edge so I can't get much downward pull on the load. I ended up doing a 4 way direct tied down on the D-rings then running a set of chains thru the fork tubes and putting as tight of a reverse and downward angle thru the rub rail and back up to keep it within the rails and just pulled them in opposite directions. The tarp looks like crap, but it covered the load. Still not sure why they want these tarped. The engine itself is enclosed in a custom made poly/vinyl bag that is thicker than my tarp, so it is more weather tight and protected in that than under my tarp. But hey, they wanted it tarped..so it is

I've been with it since the beginning @supersnackbar and have stated my understanding of your negativity at times, and in my last comment went on to say how you and Kyle are a rare breed these days in this industry, not many people willing to give their lives to the profession like you guys do. I for one hope to see a turn around for you, whether that be at SPD or somewhere new.

Sounds secure to me. I almost never cross chain anything as the only means of securement, especially if the chains are laying almost flat on the deck. There’s only gravity holding the load down at that point. Engines cradles are hard to get any real downward pull because the securement points are so close to the deck.

we tarp the bags to keep them from flapping and protect the bag. Even a small engine is several million dollars.

Oh great, as if I wasn't apprehensive enough pulling this load...now I'll be more nervous.

I been following SSB since the beginning of this adventure. And I had a number of conversations with kylefitzy about coming to work for SPD. I backed out since I already work for Daseke @ Lonestar. I was concerned about jumping from one to the other and the other turning into the previous or worse. (did that make sense?) I watched how the Shilli drivers to a rubbing when they got absorbed as well as the Steelman bunch. Fortunately, the changes at LST have been gradual and acceptable so far. Having a nice truck helps. And a good dispatcher. And my situation changed, I'm now on the Texas 'Super' regional board. (basically same freight just home on the weekend's) I hate that SSB is having a rough go at it. I hope you'll hope you'll stick it out. May have to lower you're expectations, a little. Hang in there.

As long as Wylie is involved with SPD, there is no future for me here. SPD itself is a good place, but when Fargo is involved it's like putting sour cream on your holiday pumpkin pie instead of whipped cream, and sprinkling it with black pepper instead of cinnamon. And with all the changes Daseke is making, the silent belief many of us had that they will eventually combine all their various small companies into a few large segmented groups looks to more and more likely, so the advantage of working for a small company will eventually be gone. In the beginning, when Don Daseke was running his private holdings company, it wasn't bad, but when they went public and he retired (or was retired by the board of directors) it went from a decent company to a "profit over people" company. So my next move will be to a company that, 1) isn't associated in any way with Daseke so 2) there is no risk of ever being assimilated by Wylie.

    dwells40 Thanks this.

I really think you’d find something you like at an end dump company like JK Williams, @motocross25 is a straight shooter on work environment and earnings, really nice equipment and run 48. I don’t know if I could see myself doing anything other than dumps, minimal to no wait times and interesting freight. As long as you can get over the pucker factor of standing 40 feet of trailer up on one axle, you’ll have it licked.
