Saw a Driver a few weeks ago who was using a cane. He must have been 80 yrs old. Took him a long time to open the doors. Had a step ladder to get in and out of the Truck. Rope tied to the ladder to pull up into the cab. I suspect he would rather work than sit at home. More power to him. Hard to believe.
NightWind and kemosabi49 Thank this. -

I love this job, but I will never get to that point.
In my opinion, I would be putting too many lives in danger if I were that decrepit.201 and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I disagree. I've yet to see a 60 year old driver or older with his or her foot on the dash.
Chinatown and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Well, I disagree. It's a fact, older people have more health issues, I'm finding that out the hard way. Vehicle accidents make up the #1 cause of death worldwide, many health related, and many more health related not reported. I'm 69, last year, without any warning whatsoever, I passed out while riding my bike. Never passed out in my life, last thing I ever thought of. Many tests, all inconclusive. Had that been in a car or truck, could have been devastating. I look at the guy with a cane and rope as a sad thing. This guy shouldn't be working, especially in a job like that. If he can't walk, can he get his foot to the brake in time? Our country should take care of people like that, not force them to work to pay some stupid healthcare bill. Insurance too. I've known folks that get to be older, the company pushes them out, again, for insurance reasons. Driving a truck into retirement age is such a poor choice. Health risks aside, don't you want to do something besides drive a GD truck? Sheesh.Lazer, Flat Earth Trucker, Numb and 1 other person Thank this.

You are absolutely right. Our country does not take care of its own people. But no other country does either. It seems to be human nature to organize ourselves in unsustainable societies based on nothing but making people desperate and then exploiting their desperation. I'm starting to realize that trucking is mostly for people who feel they don't have any other options, like me. I'm not sure what I'll do yet. I'm going to submit a resume in my previous (burnout) industry, but the chance of that working out is minimal.201 Thanks this.
