Interesting facts on recliners:
My late daughter (2015/cancer) started work at a recliner manufacturer senior year of high school (Age 18) thru the DO (Diversified Occupations) program . Graduated and went full time; wanted to work, marry and have a family. Kid was sharp and had a great personality and after 1 year full time, she was 3rd person in the accounting dept. Computers were getting in and Lotus 123 came out as the spreadsheet. Julie loved it, mastered it and was teaching others.
With this ability, she was active in COST accounting. Figuring and applying ways to cut cost of building their recliner. Then one of the best on the market.
Now the situation. Frame parts were cut by other companies and delivered. Assembly used 4 metal corner angle pieces to make the box frame for the seat.
These brackets were bought from hardware supplier. Held in by 8 screws, 4 on each flange into the good oak wood. It was decided that they could use just 4 screws on them instead of 8. 2 larger to the angle. Less screws, less time putting them in. Getting there.... Then it was decided to use a triangular piece of oak in place of the metal angle bracket, just run the screws in to it from the board side in. Could cut the wood themselves by splitting a 4" long piece of oak 3" x 3", catty cornered, make two. We have cut the screws in half, done away with the metal bracket purchase, and now are using cheap poplar and gum lumber for the frame boards.
Ah ha, just glue in the corner blocks, as the soft wood did not hold up well, split with the screws. These various economy's were extended to number of and wire size in springs, etc. My daughter would regale me with the actual $ economy on a spreadsheet in detail, and could add the reduced labor costs. She was more impressed by the numbers she was given to manipulate than the actual results. Lotus 123 was a boon to industries. Just suppose, crunch the numbers, then do it. Ergo profit...
So that is why the company went under, the chair is no longer made, and you guys here are talking about problems I knew were being developed 50 years ago....
