Can’t help but wonder how dumb one has to be for it to never enter their brain that “maybe there is a better way to do this”.

Of the 3 bridge strikes I know of recently around Denver, 2 of them were excavators that hit bridges that were right around 16'. And they were hard strikes, not just a clip.

I'm not sure how low that blade can go but my instinct would have been to reverse onto the trailer and at least have something close to the ground to act as a prop.
In my early days here I bought a mini-digger and dug myself a swimming pond at the high point of the garden. I live on the side of a hill and, despite all the trees and green vegetation, only a few inches down is solid rock and one piece I estimated at about half a tonne in weight. I wanted to use it in a lower part of the garden which meant carrying it on the bucket down a steep slope. Although it seemed counter intuitive to not counter balance the weight on the up hill side, after some thought, I elected to let the rock lead. The right answer. With the bucket hovering just a couple of inches from the ground, and constantly re-adjusted, the journey was made in complete safety with no nasty moments.

Apologies to those of you who are experts at this, but I am not an expert, just seems to me that the first part of the body to put into gear, is the brain. ;):)
