Most people don't last long at Schneider because of low pay. Looks good on paper, but that's it. Tanker division is ok to get the career started, but dry van is for those where money isn't a priority.

The following Forum thread offers an interesting & detailed "snapshot" of what tanker training/life is like over at the "Big Orange":

    The rookie

Fast forward to the present -- all the involved tractors are very likely to be automatics.

NEWS FLASH: You can learn tanker elsewhere -- after you've learned to drive a big rig with other trailers/freight -- & bypass a lot of that drama.

I was going to go to tanker there -- but after talking to several other intermodal drivers who had already been in it -- I decided to get tanker training elsewhere.

    Glad I did....:D

Best bets for avoiding darkness duty: dry van, or flatbed work.

    Your choice.

Dang it! Out of all the games trucking companies play, you’d think at least the large ones would be big enough to send paychecks! I hate how willing they are to steal from people!

I guess I’ll have to get my foot in the door somewhere. Hopefully I don’t have to start with something that’s not too good. Of course my goal will be to make some really good money, I understand I need to pay my dues, and especially prove I can drive safely.

That’s a shame. I wouldn’t say money is the priority to start with, but of course I’m doing all this to make money! I’d rather work for free as little as possible.

There's no dues to pay other than being a safe driver.

If not working at night or in the dark, my experience from say getting real close to 40 years, is why would you choose trucking. Most jobs I have had either start in the dark or end in the dark. AM shift local means anything after midnight, pm shift is anytime after noon. either way its going to run into darkness, OTR you have pickup & delivery appointments that oh by the way you don't set, you just need to be there. As far as Schneider, good luck with that, personally I think you would be better starting off at SWIFT. Look your first company is probably going to be a year or so at best, by then you'll have a much better idea of what you got yourself into. Vegas by the way has local job, daytime, like bottom dumps for the cement and precast plants, pneumatic tankers, neither are bad. They tend to be early AM driving jobs that get you home everyday.

Thanks for your thoughts. Honestly the company I work for doesn’t much matter to me, at least not yet. I want an honest company, where I can stay out of trouble and hopefully make some decent money. My understanding is I am most likely going to have to change companies after a year or so if I want to make money. I’d be open to relocating, I hear lots of good things about Nevada. I’m still learning and have lots of things to understand before I can say “I want this job, for these reasons”. I’m not against learning a trade or anything like that. I just don’t love the 9-5 lifestyle. I feel like trucking would suit me well. My plan is to have extremely minimal expenses and basically live in trucks for a while. Of course plans can change, but it seems like a great opportunity to keep costs down and really get ahead, if I’m lucky and work hard. I’m a pretty simple guy I don’t need too much to be happy. For me driving in the dark is not the issue. It’s a routine, the sleep schedule. I did nights for 2 years active duty, it really got to me. I didn’t handle it well.

If you're wanting a regular sleep schedule, definitely don't go reefer.
