To protect yourself if you get a hospital bill. Already you lost money, which you should consider that this is the fault of the driver who is the owner lease purchasing the truck. You may not feel this way but if you get the bill, then you need to recoup the losses. Well, I'll share my own story about the sleeping on the top bunk: I posted a couple years ago about my Co driver crashing the truck while I was asleep. I don't think I ever mentioned that I was asleep on the top bunk (with the safety net up). In my particular case, being on the top was very likely the only reason I survived - I was ejected somehow, likely through the little opening in the red square in the one picture.
