Hey, quick question. I’m looking at switching from Pam Transport to Schneider.

I only have 30 days experience but at least I’ll make more money and be home weekly with Schneider on a dry van account ( Home Depot ) that’s offered in my area.

I had three questions about dollar general with Schneider. It is offered in my area and they say top pay is $91k

    1) What’s a realistic weekly pay for the DG account? Like.. how much do you bring home weekly?

    2) What’s your experience been like with DG? Is it as hard and grueling as people make it sound. I’m pretty in shape … think wide receiver body type. I’m sure I could do it … but is it worth it?

    3) What’s your home time schedule look like?

    Thanks!

I have a question for you. I’m interested in intermodal, but I need 3 months experience for my area. I only have 30 days experience with PAM and the pay is trash and home time is every 3 weeks, which doesn’t work for me.

So I’m looking to switch to Schneider.

What does home time look like for you on the intermodal account?

Well you’re not going to get top pay until you’re getting top mileage, and training other drivers, so minimum of 12 months.

Realistically I think you can count on $1000+ a week starting, and I’ve already had a week over $1700 my first month. Probably 65-75k first year average.

It’s a hard job, yes really hard. It’s not for everyone. For me I like it because I do much less driving, around 1000 miles a week on average. You have to realize your job is unloading trailers by hand. It’s not fun, it’s not easy. It has a higher risk of injury. If you’ve got a bad shoulder or knee, I definitely wouldn’t do it. In shape is all relative with this job, you need to be in work shape.

This job could realistically make or break your career. It will turn you into an expert backer faster than any other job I know of. Thats because the DG lots suck. They are not meant for trucks. Your skills will be tested everyday, with little room for error. It can be incredibly stressful, especially during rush hour or any high traffic stores.

Worth it? Sort of. I’m definitely under paid, but not by enough that it’s not worth it to me right now. Would also be really hard to make the same amount of money for the number of miles actually driving I do.

Home time on my specific account is definitely above average by quite a lot. I do Dollar General Reefer only, it’s a little bit different than DG dry. I do 7-10 stops a day, dry is more like 2-4 stops with larger unloads. I also have to deal with the minus 20 degree freezer. It is possible to get home almost every day on this account, some guys get home 5 days a week.

Best of luck- feel free to reach out with any questions
