Should have hung the keys back in 2023, when he started drawing more than he was making, hoping for the market recovery that never came.

There is no inherent right to be successful by hauling brokered freight. You could be successful in something for a few months or years and then you’ll have to make a change or drastic changes to stay successful. Same thing doesn’t work all the time. If you’re unwilling to change, don’t expect to succeed. If you’re in business with a primary goal , only focusing on your hopes, dreams, and desires- without considering your customers, hopes, dreams, and desires.- It may be hard to succeed. Just hauling 3pl loads you really never get a chance to have your own customer to serve. Brokers have their place. Freight, payers, and carriers can benefit from their services. But it’s only a segment….

diversify…. During planting season I’ve talked to the farm service centers and pull their trailers to the field. They pay hourly rate furthest I went was 50 miles out.
They pay the same every year, with 4 hour minimum call out if it rains or anything still got 4 hours coming.

Pretty much. At the end of the day, the issue is that there's still too many operators, be they brokers or carriers, for the freight available. The post-COVID boom brought in a *lot* of capacity. Freight volumes, last I checked, were around 2019 levels, which weren't anything spectacular. Even lanes I've been running for the same customer with the same carriers for years have been pushed down. The cycle will continue to cycle. Eventually the shoe will be on the other foot, and we'll be back to customers #####ing at us for overcharging them. It's a yo-yo effect of who's complaining about what.

100% blame goes to the owner. He effed himself more than anyone else came close.

Don't become an OO thinking you can run it like a driver.

This guy would have failed with covid rates too, just may have taken a bit longer.

    See ya

You are running flatbed, I presume.
That's more than 2 dol a mile or whatever dry van freight pays. That's a different segment where a broker carrier relationship has potential to become more intimate. Easier to find own customers too. From that perspective, it is easier to judge. You could say he should have jumped on the open deck or reefer. He did not. That's on him.

I did not - necessarily - start the thread to feel sorry for him but rather to show that spot market and dry van don't mix too well. To make an assertion.
I'd rather have someone with a similar dry van experience to have an opinion on this.

As I thought, the broker repowered the load. The protagonist will most likely lose all of his linehaul charge but get his trailer back once unloaded. It's 2020 Great Dane, I may buy it from him...The truck will be salvaged by the tow company. The way it ended was predictable, and I had seen it before.

For curiousity's sake- how far had he travelled before it needed repowering?
