Mining shield. Think this one is 350 ton capacity. They set behind the continuous miner and support the roof as well as provide a safe walkway for the miners.
If they are making a cut on a seam of coal 150’ wide they will need enough shields setting side by side to support the roof along that 150’ area.
After the cutting head makes a cut the cylinder in the bottom of the shield frame will push the cutter frame closer to the seam of coal preparing for the next cut. Then the top of the shields will lower and hydraulically pull themselves closer to the cutter frame, push back up against the mine roof and then another cut will be made.
There is a conveyor built into the cutter frame as I call it, that moves the coal to one end where it is moved on out of the mine.
The one I’m hauling will be raised up before I take on to the mining expo later in the month. The show is June 3-5….
