When I attended the naturalization ceremony in KC in 2011, - 80% of the room were folks of the age about ready to draw SSI.

This was because of family based sponsored immigration - these were relatives of immigrants that were not going to actively contribute to the economy. Just rely on it’s social services, and support from their families.

Gretchen had to sign up for financial responsibility for me as part of the process after we married. Kinda funny, because I paid for her CDL training and divorce proceedings, and brought $160k to the US after selling my house in NZ.

My intention was not to move my family here, it was my choice to make the best of the opportunity.

Probably sounding like an a - hole now.

 

Again, I implore you to look into the rules other countries have when it comes to immigration or even visas to live there. And again I will ask you why is it so bad that we try to have rules here? Rules that, even if they were enforced, are nowhere near as restrictive as other countries.

I don't want to, nor am I going to look into other countries rules, because I don't care. We are not talking about other countries, just this one. Even if I was an obedient little rascal and did so, it's not going to change my opinion, so I don't know why you keep suggesting that.

 

A-hole? Nah, we are just talking. I mean...social services aren't bad. I have no problem with them at all. At least tax dollars used for social services would help people. If they're old enough to collect SSI, then they'd probably move in with the family to be looked after I'd assume. I can't imagine there isn't any context to that. If able bodied and healthy, I'm sure all of those elderly people would be out here working.
