52 repoed trucks and over 2,500 leased units out making money. Seems to me with those numbers, it's not such a bad deal. Most of my friends who have leased from IEL completed their leases and had their trucks titled over. There is a couple out of...Lathrop I think...who have five trucks all leased to Swift, all acquired through IEL. Maybe I look for it more or hang around with different people, but I see more success than failure. I hate to say it, but most of the failures happen due to lack of planning by the lessor and letting the "cool factor" get the better of them. By that, I mean they lease a W900 because it's cool rather than think of this as a business and get something with better fuel economy and lower payments that will last just as long.

What will you gross this year working for Swift? What is your home time like? Only asking to try to gauge how good our program is vs a major carrier.
-
let me ask you this way.....if you take a cross section of all the lease ops driving today....how many have 6mo or less experience...and how many have been driving for a year plus? How many of those repo trucks were from drivers who just didn't have any experience.
See, if you ask the ones who got their truck repoed.....and ask them honestly, why they failed.....you'll find they didn't take into any thought about where to fuel.....their route.....and thinking they could go home whenever they wanted (every weekend?) AND turned down any load that wasnt 1000 miles. you think a driver like that is going to make it?
LOL....i dont think so.
and injun....no worries..... -
As for the not working weekends, well personally I feel if you have to stay out 3-4 weeks at a time, you ain't making enough money in the first place! -
I think that most of those who get involved in these fleece programs do so because they become enthralled with the idea of being an owner operator. They commit to these leases without the experience to properly evaluate them. I would expect that most who become involved with them have little experience, although I have met a few who have been in the business for a number of years who have tried one or more of these lease programs. Having some actual business experience would help some of these people make better decisions. I would wager that most of them don't even read the contract before signing on the dotted line.
If someone has good credit and a few years experience they are not as likely to become involved in these programs as those with limited or poor credit and little or no experience. I would like to see these people drive for a carrier at least for a couple of years before they are allowed to lease a truck. At least they would have an opportunity to see what it costs to run a truck. -
ok....so why is everyone giving me so much dung about it ? been driving for two yrs. as for me, my head isnt any bigger now than it was when i was a company driver, just because i'm an "O/O" (lease op). I dont walk any different. I still put my pants on the same. You see some of these guys at terminals, some who wear those lame "mentor" shirts like its a 'status' thing.....those same guys will almost strut....like their 'cool', or they're better than you, the peeon company driver, becuase they're an "owner/op". oh...lets not forget they are too good to waive at company drivers anymor as they pass by entering/exiting terminals or in the yard.
i'm not like that. still the same. i still waive. and as of yet, i havent had the chance to sit at a terminal to even consider 'bragging' i'm an O/O. When i got my truck in Columus, i didnt drive it around the yard to show it off, didn't brag to anybody i just leased a truck. cause really...who cares?
my average runs being a co. driver were around 300-350/day. So far, leaseing, they've been 500-600. Heck....i had a load from central KS to southern Indiana. almost 800 ttl miles, picked up on the 19th, but didnt live unload till the 21st. i asked to t-call this, and memphis set it up as a t-call in edwardsville. i said i was not t-calling in edwardsville cause that would be giving up $500. My DM came in the next morning, and said that the CSR told him that if i could get it there by 130p on the 20th, they'd take it early. and guess what....i drove 10 hrs from shipper to SW indiana, 650 miles in 10 hrs. and why? because i know i need to run hard. i know enough to not lolly-gag around in truck stops just to show off my truck.
it is an ego thing more than anything......for those who jump into a lease plan without doing some research. -
ill probably stay out 2-3 weeks. and take my normal 1.5 days off. I mean i gotta have some hometime SOMETIME. not going to be like some of these co. drivers who are out for a month at a time before getting 2 days off.
