That was my thoughts too, I've never taken a dime, but have paid in a boatload of them, from the govt until I used WIA...

I think that the concept of WIA funding is smart..Take myself for example....The truck driver course I am interested in taking is 8 weeks long at a cost of about 4000.00. If I draw my unemployment for 8 weeks(300.00/wk) during the training, along with the cost of the WIA grant, that is a total of $6400.00 and then I am placed into a truck and become a working taxpayer again.....On the other hand...if I end up on the road of unemployment, it will have drained $15,600.00 from the unemployment coffers.
So...by utilizing the WIA grant, I just saved the government $9200.00. The government is happy and I am happy to have a new career. This WIA program sounds like a win/win to me. -
I went to the unemployment office today and got my application form and had a few questions for the case manager there.....Even though WIA is federally funded, the state of Indiana has dropped all CDL schools from the list back in May..no funding whatsoever if you want to make an honest living as a truck driver here.
The government here in Indiana sucks. They put out a list of 50 hot future jobs in Indiana on it with trucking at #19 but then they drop it from funding. Seems like Mitch Daniels and his republican cronies have a penchant for speaking out of both sides of their mouths.
There were 14 jobs in the Sunday paper just for CDL drivers and truck driving jobs took up most of the jobs section. Everywhere I look I see jobs, jobs and more truck driving jobs yet the government sees no opportunity to get people trained and working...So the unemployment office suggests C1 trucking school in Fort Wayne as they have their own funding source through prehires....I have already looked into that place..Not only does the facility look sub par but there are too many negative stories about it.
I guess the gov't would rather that you sit on your behind and draw out your full unemployment rather than get you working...Go figure. -

Just to add...apparently although WIA is federally funded, the states can distribute funds as they see fit. The state of Indiana is likely routing funding into their own pockets for other endeavors.

Let me know how it goes for you.....The only option I see here is C1 in Fort Wayne but it is 5995.00 and that seems awful steep for a 3 week crash course and I really question how well prepared the drivers are that leave there.
The unemployment office told me today that I can still complete the app and they will put it on file and contact me should the state decide to allow funding for CDL training again. I think it is BS...If there is an abundance of truck driving jobs online and in the paper then they ought to be putting unemployed people behind the wheel.....Isn't Indiana the crossroads of America?...I guess Mitch Daniels thinks it is a dead end for truck drivers.
