Easy to tell who the real rookies are in this thread
If you have never thrown a chain on a steer tire ,you havent been
    in the real do-doo.

Granted Swift does run a huge fish tank, but with the likes of Stevens Transport
and Averett there are far bigger #######'s out here to tend with.

Your only as good as the last mile your drove.

Winter of 1997 coming back from CA right before Thanksgiving. Flag was Closed due to Snow. I was right in teh Middle Between Sacramento and 58 so I could go either way. I heard that Flag was closed due to 5 inches of Ice and 2 feet of snow. I made the choice to hit Donner. Donner was requiring MAX Chains and were advising one steer wheel chained on Trucks that night. I had enough Iron to do them all. I went up and over Donner that night with singles on my Steers 2 Sets of Doubles on my Drives then 2 sets of Singles on my Trailer. That tell you how much I threw that Night. BTW it was the First Time I ever threw any Iron myself.

obviously some people dont get in the snow and muck alot---but the weather is better in texas thats for sure---yes if it is nasty--you chain up a steer tire---and all the drives and a trailer tire as well
no use having traction if you cant steer on the ice
or maybe companies and o/o should spec there trucks with double lock ups and get some tires that work in snow--some times it isnt all about the least rolling resistance
but then its nice to just flip in the locks and snicker while i see people who cant move in the snow and ice

Nor have I...I've been on Vail hundreds of times during "Maximum Chains" requirement and have NEVER chained up a steer tire.
Same with Donner...There has never been a steer tire chain requirement on Donner pass.

Suit yourself dude... Oregon and California have requirements for chaining steers as well.

Didn't Idaho have this requirement years ago? 30+ years ago?
