Weren't those the years when fuel was insanely inflated? I don't think that the days of long-haul loads are over for everyone. It depends on the company's customer service base, the amount of freight available along shipping lanes, the amount of drivers that are working (more drivers working at a large company equals less miles for everyone), and the specialty of the job (dry-van vs reefer vs liquid bulk vs etc...).
When I was at Knight my miles were between 2100 to 3200 a week average. Granted, I had to haul those short mile loads to make a decent average for the week. Nonetheless, it was a company that I was happy to quit. Even though I left on good terms, I would NEVER again work for any other truck company that's run like "everyone else". Some drivers weren't happy, and have found other companies to haul for. Some drivers just don't know better, but it would be pointless to tell everyone not to work here or not to work there.
My point is this: If many people just want to hear the sugary good things that companies have to offer, then just give them that. Especially since the other experienced drivers that have worked and quit at some of these companies like Knight and have shared their experiences on the internet with complete strangers are labeled "liars" and "bs artists", especially by people that have just started driving. This is what I have observed in my short (almost) two years on this forum from other people on this forum:
A). You were not willing to drop your empty trailer at a random customer, and then get told to find another empty trailer for your next load. This will cut into your 70hr clock, and you will not be paid for wasting your time, literally. You only get 14 hours a day. (People here would say how lazy you are for not wanting to search for an empty).
B). You were not willing to drop your load off at a terminal, and then get told to find an empty trailer for your next load. (People here would say that you're an idiot for wanting to not lose money by dropping off your uncompleted load).
C). You were pissed that you didn't get reimbursed for detention, and tried to handle your issue with your DM and payroll. (People here would bash you because you are not willing to work for free).
D). You were sent a load to your qualcomm in which you would not make the pickup appointment on time, and you were still under a load. You expressed your concern for the appointment time to your dispatcher. You were told over the phone to pick up and deliver the load regardless, or turn in your truck. (People here would call you a liar).
****************
I could go on, but I will not. Even though this is a great forum, this is one of the many reasons why I really don't like visiting the site that often any more. People here are too quick to judge and dismiss the experiences of other drivers that have fallen on bad times for whatever reasons. Dna, Don, Truckerdave, Rollover, and others...> I have yet to see this, but I will take the liberty to do this: Thank you for sharing your experiences both good and bad regarding the true nature of what many drivers have to go through. Some of us out here actually live in reality, and are interested in both the positive and negative experiences that a driver may encounter, as well as the good and bad aspects when working as a truck driver for one of these clone companies.
Sooner or later, people will to wake up to reality, but then again that would create a paradox due to that being impossible.
Do not work for knight transportation!!!

Well when I was there it was all about taking all you can from the driver who will be quitting next anyways as priority número UNO! Everything was the drivers problem and from most of what see here it still seems that way for the most part.
Big Don and truckerdave1970 Thank this. -

And you're right as far as my experience: with an oh-so incredibly difficult job that requires basic reading skills, holding a steering wheel for long periods of time while sitting, maneuvering through traffic and tight spaces, navigating a combination vehicle that could weigh as much as 40 tons with any given load through inclement weather conditions, backing, following directions, displaying punctuality by picking up and delivering 100% on-time with very little issues, being able to complete daily visual inspections while noting and fixing potential problems with the truck, and maintaining a professional appearance and attitude, anyone with less than ten years experience will find truck driving soooooo difficult.......NOT!
After serving in the Navy for several years, I have found truck driving incredibly easy compared to the crap that I had to learn and operate onboard those highly sophisticated submarines. The most difficult thing for me to overcome was my nervousness and my attitude. No, I don't know everything, but I do catch on and learn things very quickly. Didn't mean to step on anyone's bad ego that most drivers tend to develop after 10 years behind the wheel. So, no more wasting my time. There's a whoooole different thread on this site where egotistic "experienced" drivers that look down upon those with little experience congregate. Maybe you should pop in every now and then and give those guys a grumpy "hello".
Goodbye!formertaxidriver Thanks this.
