I've read all the Schneider threads on the good and bad boards so I know where the company stands with drivers around here.
That being said, has anyone tried the Schneider "Home Run" program? Supposedly it's a regional deal where you get out and run for 2 wks and then stay home for one. Is it legit?
Schneider's home run program?

I am on the home run program, works well for me. They try and run it out on Wednesday and back on Tuesday but well freight doesn't always go along with the plan. I have been out till Wednesday or Thursday but with that being said I still get my 7 days off. I get the same miles (when I'm working) as I did OTR. Just remember its really a pert time job as you do lose the week. By running W-T your get one full weeks pay and two partial weeks.
Wildcat74 Thanks this. -
How many miles are you getting on a typical 2 week span if you don't mind my asking? Do you get to take your truck home or are they having you keep it at a terminal? Same truck every time or is it a slip seating deal?
I'm ok with the part time thing, I've got a truck and end dump at home but stuff has just been getting more and more slow here lately, need to get going on something else. -
Granted this was in 2004, I did homerun out of Dallas. Three of us shared two trucks. At any given time, one of us would be on our seven days off and the other two would be out running. We luckily had two nearly new trucks among us and treated them as our own taking care of maintenance issues on our time instead of passing on to the next guy. We left CB's, fridges, XM radios, driver supplies, and basic tools in both trucks, just swapping out clothes and bedding. Usually Wednesdays is when we went home or came back out and I would run 5000-6000 miles in those two weeks.
It can be a good set up but finding two other drivers is the hard part. Most people will say they care about the equipment but they really don't and you'll end up spending a few days having the truck fixed and you'll notice them even more beat up than the last time you saw them. Oh and then the whole personal hygiene issue with so many people completely against showering it can be really gross living in someone elses funk. As you can tell I knew my co-drivers and I still had to be convinced to do it.Wildcat74 Thanks this. -
I average about 400-450 miles a day, just keep up with the mac 18's (your best friend) You are slip seating, so the truck goes out again when you bring it back, a lot of the times it has a load on it and you finish it out. Some places have three drivers to two trucks, we don't run that tight of a program, you get one of the trucks that is in the program, most are newer. You just have to get use to packing so you can make the move in & out of the truck without much pain. I carry a warm/cold cooler (never have used the warmer) a crock pot along with my cb and of course my computer and personal gear. I liked having my own truck but like the time off better.

The time off is huge as far as the mental sanity and maintaining a somewhat normal home life goes.
How does it work when the truck has a load on it when you pick it up, who figures how to split the miles for the trip I mean?
I would love to go out and run 3500+ miles/week while I am out but I understand that this is getting to be a rare thing in the industry no matter where you are and who you are running for.
I've been trying to find Schneider's pay scale but they don't seem to want to advertise that too much. From the looks of it the pay is .39/mile if you've got over 6 months experience, is this correct?
Many thanks for the replies guys, huge help to be armed with the info going into all of this. -
You get paid for your dispatched miles. Pick up a load in Iowa going to Boston and its your time to get off, you are sent to the OC that you would be out of, one driver paid from the pick up point to the OC the other driver from the OC to the delivery.
Other drivers may be getting more miles but I tend to run in the early AM (Military thing I guess) so I am a little conservative on my mac 18's
The pay scale as well as some of the address for the OC's seem to be big secrets. Go figure. You should be right around .39 cpm I do like getting paid for all dispatched miles. Loaded, mt or bobtail. Hope this helps. -
It sounds like now they just have a whole bunch of trucks and they just put you in what's available.
As for the mileage, if the load is from Buffalo New York to Laredo Texas and you live in Dallas, The driver that picked up the load would be paid from Buffalo to Dallas and the final driver would be paid from Dallas to Laredo. Homerun or not swapping loads, I think Schneider calls them relays, is a frequent occurrence. -

Many thanks guys! You've been amazingly helpful. This sounds like it could be a really good fit for me. One last question, do they let home runners train as well?
