I prefer to float, I find it smoother and I can save wear and tear on clutch...

I only float when I'm light, never heavy and usually on the up shift rarely on the downshift. The clutch is there for a reason - to ease the strain on the transmission and driveline and should be used at all times. Those who dont use the clutch are either stupid or lazy - I'm lazy.

Those aren't the only two options- you can ease a trans out of gear, slowly change rpm's and clutch it into gear instead of floating it- same thing but with the protection of using the clutch- and only once, no need here to doubleclutch.

If you take about three seconds to raise rpm's while downshifting and drop it into the next lower gear you'll be smoother and save a few drops of fuel doing it.

Use both, teach both. When I was on the road I went through periods of time where I did one for years or the other for years. I floated empty or loaded for years and I d/c empty or loaded for years. With almost 2 million miles on two trucks (359 400 Cat 15 Over and 379 425 Cat 15 Over) I never had a problem with clutch or transmission on either. However one decides, work on it like the transmission has eggshells for gears. Rough is uncomfortable and can be damaging whether floating or d/c.

in driving school you have to learn the proper way which is useing clutch and learn how to double clutch.floating is something u do after school and cdl test,if you try floating the gears when on your cdl test the instructor probably wont be to happy with you.

The things trucking schools teach are to get you working. Once you get settled in and start earning money, things change. With some innovation and practice you can design your own way to do your job efficiently or easier. Or, just to be different.

Kind of true. Instructors have a curriculum to follow (Small deviations) but they generally are not trying to create drivers in their own image. Everyone will learn to form their own identity as a driver... well, almost everyone. :biggrin_25525:
