Hi everyone!
My nephew in law is starting is glorious career as a truck driver by getting his CDL with C1 truck driving school then going on to train with USA trucking.
I have been driving for about 11 years and understand most of what goes on OTR, but I would like to ask a few specific questions from some of you USA drivers so that I can give him honest answers from "the horses mouth" instead of just what the recruiter feeds him.
I understand that USA is basically a starter company with the potential to become a good job in the future if he is cut out for the work.
First, he lives in Springfield, MO. The recruiter has told him he will be out 3-4 days then home 1-3 days. I find that incredibly hard to believe seeing how there's no terminal in Springfield, but whatever.
Second, I would like to know a ball park compensation package. Like what should he expect to make per mile. If you don't feel comfortable posting this, a private message would be appreciated.

They have an alacarte deal, depends on what the special is they are running right now, seems like 25 cents a mile is where they are starting.
They just went to this regional freight system about a month ago. The home time sounds suspect, seeing how the policy is one day off for every seven. Maximum out now is 3-4 weeks, it was 5. I'm otr but they run us like regional now. Miles are decent, the pay gets there in time. I'm 8 months in don't know whether or not I'm staying or going. I have a good fleet manager, that's the key here.
If the guy is frustrated easily, he make it here. Frustration is the name of the game here, but its manageable. Good luck to him. -
Yep...Pay starts at .25, then .26, next .29 and finally .32

Home time is every other weekend basically or as good said, every week out 2-4, you get a day home. I go home every other so I get home on Fri. Stay there Sat. and Sun. and leave out on Mon. If you stay out 3-4 I would assume you'd get home on Thurs to leave on Mon, and Thur-Tue...respectively.
It is a beginner company and it is hard to deal with many FM's. Some are great and I have unfortunately not met those. Good luck to him, and as you know, be sure to encourage him to stick it out. -
Well, honestly, that doesn't sound too bad. Every other weekend is better than I thought, although it's not as good as he says he was told.
Still, I remember my first year and it wasn't easy. It shouldn't be in my opinion, just so you know if you're cut out for the job or not.
I do have some experience dispatching and both of you have said that it's how good your fleet manager is. What makes a fleet manager good or bad in your opinion? -
communication...and looking out for the drivers. Neither I have has done that yet.

its what you make it, if you have a bad relationship with you fm, asked to be switched.....not everyone on the earth gets along. The switch is a simple process.

When I first started I was assigned to ft 44, Jamie Franklin was the FM then. I think she has went on to other things now.

I started in fleet 6. FM was newly transferred from night dispatch. He was awesome and I never had any problems making money or getting home. He quit and I was reassigned to fleet 18. Fm there is a veteran and very professional. No complaints except I didn't care for regional which is what 18 is. I asked to go back OTR and was put in fleet 51. Very young (21) female fm. Works hard to make her drivers happy but I think she gets a little overwhelmed sometimes.
My best success has been in putting the needs of the company over my own. I ask the fm what he/she needs instead of telling them what I want or need. I've always been treated fairly and respectfully and never had to call safety or up the chain to get home or get loaded. You can call it brown nosing if you like, I call it cultivating a good relationship.
My only real complaints have been with maintenance issues and upper management sometimes making decisions that (IMHO) would make the window lickers on the short bus proud.bigmikectn and Jozett Thank this.
