Makes no sense to me, if it won't work without the tractor brakes set, are you supposed to tug against the locked brakes until the pin releases?
That's kind of stupid, IMHO.
Still gotta crank the landing gear down and unhook the lines. Seems redundant to me. -
Occasionally I have to move my 5th wheel of I load a trailer wrong (like today) but it is an easy process as long as you make sure to lower your landing gear and dump your air suspension. I tried to help a driver last week slide his but to my amazement he did not have an air dump valve, so it was basically impossible for him to do with the 47k they had loaded him with. He got it moved, it wasn't pretty, and I don't know how he didn't break the driveshaft tho......I pity the next guy who gets that PI&I truck.

You are kidding right? With 31 years and you say that.
To the OP what was you weights?
first look to see if the 5th wheel can be slid. Most companies disable the slider now.
To slide the 5th wheel you have to take the pressure off of the 5th wheel by rolling the landing gear down until you hear air leaving the bags. DON"T use the air dump. Then get in the truck push or pull depending on model to release the slider pins. It will say Slide 5th wheel, 5th wheel slider or something to that affect. You will have to go back and forth to loosen the pins up. Then slide it to where you need to. Sliding the 5th wheel will not move much weight.
"Use only for trailer disconnect" is to drop the trailer.
To drop a trailer disconnect the airlines. Then you get in the truck push or pull the 5th wheel release depending on model and release the tractor breaks. Pull forward just enough for the jaws to clear the pin. THIS IS TO DROP A TRAILER ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Yeah but which way do ya crank to slide the landing gear ?......(grin)

Heavy on the spread, it's not your trailer, right JDP? lol -
So yes, color me ignorant.I do stick my foot in my mouth on occasion around here and I'm still a big believer in that you learn something new every day.
But, I have driven one of those new-fangled autermatic transmissions.
And honestly, I hated it.Last edited: Jan 4, 2012
