$350 a week is horrible and really says a lot about May Trucking. I brought home $500 a week in 2002 driving a POS Schneider truck and couldn't believe I reduced myself to that money. Same pay as I was making at my previous job but working more hours.

Some things are the same...kept telling myself it would get better and it did. What has changed is the pay. Way to go May for reducing driver pay even more.

Well things are slow and you are new. Those two things combined mean you might be sitting around. Not necessarily normal, but not unexpected for someone in your situation. Absolutely you should stay though. At least six months, a year is better. Keep your eye on the prize and the prize in this case is a good employment history. Having that helps you get into better jobs later. And a better job later could mean the difference between a comfortable retirement and no retirement at all.

I saw a good post on here somewhere not too long ago from someone who was finding ways to maximize his miles. He had some great tips. He always calls his load planner a few hours before getting to a receiver. This gives the planner time to find another load and helps minimize the amount of time he has to sit. He also limited his duty time each day so he could run 7 days a week without having to do any 34 hour restarts. You don't make money while you're sitting after all. By running a little less each day, but then running 7 days, you can end up with more miles at the end of the week.

These sorts of tips may or may not work for you. But the point is, you get paid for miles and if you're not getting miles, its up to YOU to try and figure out a way to change that. Try to actively work with your load planner to keep you loaded and running as much as possible. It might not get you miracles at this point, but if doing so gets you just one extra load per week, then it'll be worth the effort.

Maybe for the first week of running solo. Maybe. You need to get with your DM or his boss or his boss and if they still ain't running you more go somewhere else.

    What attracted you to May?

I just recently started truckin' school. I'm kinda old. So, you won't see no GPS in my truck. :biggrin_25513:

Old school is the way to go. Some truckers depend too much on technology.

Did I say that I'm an expert? If I were an expert, my username wouldn't be one2learn and I wouldn't show student on my profile.

I consider my Dad, Grandfather, Step Grandfather and an uncle experts. They have done nothing but drive trucks their entire lives.

Good luck tim87. Hope everything works out for you.

...something doesn't sound right here though ... I know I said stick it out, which you should do man, but, I'm reading that a lot of newbies on here seem to be making just an average of $350?!? That doesn't seem right ... on my first couple of weeks solo I got more than that, close to $450, then of course we have the school's $45 but for the most part my company seems to run us newbies opposed to the older guys... I make more now that I'm running teams but ... my point is that I guess you aren't such a b!t># after all PAMela!
