Smaller construction companies in California are feeling the pain too. Their cranes and equipment have to burn 'clean' so they have to go and rent equipment which kills the bottom line when you have paid off equipment parked on the yard not in use and no market to sell it as no one in their right mind would buy a 1930's-1950's cranes that they could not put to work in Cali. It's too bad too because this equipment which has been taken care off for decades is now sitting rotting away.
One morning we fired up the ICE power pack (runs the vibratory hammer) to warm it up, it sent a puff of black smoke up, CalTrans made us shut it down and go home til we could get a newer power pack out on the job. Boss rented an APE at a cost of $30,000 a month which was not in the original bid budget for the job. .

    The future of fuel....

    Cal-Trans like CARB....Sucks too!!!!!

Run 395 in the winter....Cal-Trans plows just sit.....Those guys get paid to sit...Not to plow.....Plowing would mean that DOT can't enforce the Max-Chain laws.....

My plates have to be renewed on Wednesday, may edit my IRP & save $92 to leave CA. off. Only went there once last year & that was the first time since '07.

I truly hope something changes this fall with a individual who will go after the EPA on some levels. CARB married to the EPA is something this country cannot afford much longer.

Well, if more would drop California off of their "to do" list, then the power brokers might actually notice. As long as everyone bows to the boys in Sacramento, they will continue to pile on this stuff. Amazing how one state can cause so much hassle.

If everyone stopped going to Cali....The legislature would just open the border and allow the Mexican trucks in unabated....

I live in CA. Let me play Devil's Advocate here for a minute (I'll stick my neck out, but don't take it personally. I'm just curious about this comment)

CA manufactures/grows/produces a high percentage of products used throughout the whole US. What would be accomplished by shutting trucking out of a state that depends on trucking to move these products?

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a CARB fan either. It pains me to see my fellow truckers here in CA going through financial strain to keep their units compliant.

BUT... northbound on I-5. Top of the Grapevine. Do it during the day time. As you look down into the valley from the top of the hill, you THINK you're looking at a layer of dense fog on the valley floor. That's not fog, that's the $^*% we breathe. That's the $^*% that fills our lungs, dirties everything we own and touch. Wash your car and within 3 days its covered in a layer of muck and grime even though its been sitting in the driveway all that time.

    It's a shame there isn't a happy medium with this issue :\

I ship refrigerated. The regulations for not only the tractors but also the refrigeration units are painful to all. But what is the alternative solution? One suggestion- there are grants available to help offset the cost of retrofitting. The information is available on how to apply for these grants (especially for smaller companies and OO's) A little legwork to investigate these grant programs might be time well spent.

If your looking north from grapvine, most of what you see is dust, caused by the state reducing the amount of water that can be used by agriculture to save a minnow. Stupid regulation.

Also there is a happy medium to clean air, allow technology to work, and we would have clean running engines with good fuel milage. But the govt mandates have actually created more problems than they solved, and then they mandate more to try and fix the problem they created.

You're seeing the results of regulators taking a fast and save all effort to meet the Clean Air Act. On paper it looks good but we all know that in real life it doesn't. They are grasping at any industry to save their ### and the most affected are the O/O's down in the ports. They've been warned by EPA for years to come in compliance and of course when the threat of losing federal monies is on the table they look at the fastest answer they can give even if it doesn't work. They save their jobs and are fat dumb and happy while others are out of work.

I researched all that CARB had to offer as far back as '05....Unless you are a Designated Biz....You get nothing from CARB except a deadline to be in compliance....
