Local Drivers: What time do you start your work day?

    That's what I do now. The offer is for the midnight to 3am start time. The new position would be pulling a frameless end dump from Eastern PA to locations within about 250-300 miles from the terminal. Since the trucks have sleepers, some of our drivers treat it like a local position and come home every day, and some like an OTR position, staying out most of the week. It's up to us how we want to run as long as deliveries and pick-ups are done in a timely manner.

    Take it man. If you can adjust you'll love it. I start anywhere from 12:30am to 3am depending on where I'm going. I take my first load, come back, grab a second load and I'm usally always home by 2pm at the latest and sometimes before noon. Couldn't be happier. I usually go to sleep between 8pm and 9pm the nights when I'm leaving earlier the next morning. If I don't leave till 3am or so I will stay up till 10pm or so. Usually sleep four-five hours a night and make up for the sleep on the weekends, which I don't work. Sometimes I'll take a catnap in the afternoon if I'm really tired but usually I'm good to go.

    Between 10 and 11 am,work a good 13.50 hrs a day.

    I start at 6am everyday and it ends when the work is done usually 12 to 13 hour days .

    All I can say is that I tried a local gig delivering lumber for a year. We had to pull out between 1:30 am and 5:00 am depending on the run which being LTL fladbed loads of lumber meant we were there and hour before that securing, fueling, pre-trips etc. We were to be at the first customer when they opened which most lumber yards were 07:30.

    How can I put this bluntly - I HATED IT. I would have a late day not getting home till 4:30 or 5:00 pm and the next would be an early day where I had to leave by 1:30 to 2:00 am which meant having to get up between 11:30 pm and Midnight The work was horrendous especially if it was raining and I had 10 stops, meant tarping and untarping 9 times. I threw more straps and tarps in my first week on that job that I had in a year pulling flat otr. When I got my first paycheck the horrer of exactly how stupid of a move I had made began to set in. They made it all sound good when I interviewed but once I got a job there and got the first paycheck I realized that the only thing good was the health benefits.

    I stuck it out for a year bouncing between $400 and $1000 a week in pay and finally threw in the towel. I'm back OTR doing 90% oversized soI once again have the big yellow solar panels and when the sun sets the truck stops.

    Back to the OP, whether or not you'll be able to sleep under those conditions is entirely different that every one else on here. That's something you have to figure out if your capable of doing it. There are lots of things that can be done to help and most use some or all of these tips and tricks. I will say however if you have family and most especially kids your not going to get the sleep in the late afternoon and early evening that you need unless you go somewhere other than your house. No matter how you explain it to them that you have to be left alone and need quite they will only remeber for the first 15 minutes after you tell them. You absolutley have to be able to insulate yourself from any "normal daytime noise". Something as simple as hearing a toilet flush will interrupt your sleep, you may not wake up but your sub-conscious comes to life long enough to process it and bingo, several minutes of lost sleep. Now think about all the normal daytime white noise that you don't even process when your awake and now try to eliminate all of them. Kids walking down the hall, the smell of supper the wife is cooking for the kids, a cell phone ringing at the other end of the house, a neighbor mowing the lawn, someone walking a dog that happens to bark once or twice near your house, a door closing, someone knocking on the front door and the list goes on. Unless you invest thousands of dollars into making your sleeping room into a sound and VIBRATION proof cell your not going to get 8 hours of rest if you sleep for 8 hours, your probably only going to get 4 even though you fell asleep 8 hours ago.

    personally i wouldnt take the job just because i cant go to sleep at 4 pm and start at midnight. i like starting at 3 am or later that way i can have a normal sleep schedule

    I start at 530 every morning and work till the works done. I'm usually done by 2 or 3. Weekends and holidays off
