Starting orientation/training next week CT Transportation

    About me...I am a recently retired Navy Chief and recent graduate from DC Training, Class A/CDL Training school out of Florence, SC.

    After a week of going back and forth on what company to go with and what was best for the family and I, I decided to go with CT Transportation, a small flatbed outfit out of Florida and I am attending training out of their Savannah, GA location. I was not keen on their AUTO TRANS MACK trucks, but after weighing the PROS and CONS on the three out fits I was looking at, CT edged them out. Funny thing is, the other two were DRY VAN and REEFER out fits. :biggrin_25523:

    I figured I would check in periodically and keep everyone up to speed on my journey. It will be fun and I look forward to getting in the industry!

    Good luck and I think you did the right thing by going to a school. Some drivers scoff at that, but I did it and it has served me well over the years. Especially when you hear some of the old wives tales like applying the parking brakes when you need to stop fast. Or using the hand trolley to to correct a jack knife. You will almost surely get people who disagree, but just check your textbook or a CDL test manual.

    Appreciate it guys. I am looking forward to it. If this falls through, I know I have WERNER, SWIFT, CR ENGLAND and USX to fall back on. ;) Bad joke, I have nothing against any of the other companies, selected this company based on my situation and it fit the best.

    I'm gonna disagree:mtongue: Well not really, I do think school is a good thing. But that last part about the cdl test manual made me think about in Ohio's test they tell you the best way to slow down going down a hill is to continually apply the brakes lightly. Not really sure why they have that on the test it sounds like they want you to smoke your brakes!

    whoa, that would be scary. In my training it was not instructed that way. It was a controlled method. I am nervous as all get out thinking about my first big hill. We were taught to check brakes and clutch, ensure you are in the proper gear, check mirrors, get into the right lane and use four ways if possible. Not find out safe speed. If speed is posted at 50mph, our safe speed is 45mph. We would control brake to 45mph and coast back to 50mph. Keep doing this until vehicle is on safe and level ground. Does this work for you?

    Well usually you shouldnt really be gaining alot of speed if your in the right gear and youhave your jakes on. But sometimes your a gear to high or your jakes just suck. (This will definatly be the case if you ever drive for Boyd Bros.) Then you would want to do what is called stab brakeing. You firmly apply the brakes for just a few seconds then you let off for a few seconds to allow the brakes to cool, then repeat.

    And just for the record stab brakeing is what they taught us in school they just told us what to answer on the state test to pass.

    They taught us that as well. They also taught us about the jake brake too. Again, not lookin forward to my first steep downhill.

    I can remember starting out a few years ago and thinking the same thing , after a few times up and down getting the hang of it is one of the things I look forward too vs. flat long straight neverending stretches that never end and are straight and flat and neverending. YAY A HILL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , good trucks handle typical grades very very well and make some cool jake brake noises and stuff. now for the scary part you made it up and down the hill and that was great and you arrived with your load and you need to do a blindsidedock between 2 condo's on wheels pulling reefers and they arent even straight in their lanes and the door is open waiting on you to hurry up. Did I mention there is a fence 120' from the dock yeah don't hit that. O wait this is the flatbed forum:biggrin_25519:

    I have had that nightmare too. :lol:

    I know with time things that make me nervous will slowly calm themselves. I appreciate it and the laugh.
