Hooking doubles/triples

    I am new to LTL and I am always experimenting with how to hook multiple trailers. I found it easier to jack-knife each rear box in. Yeah, it sucks to keep hooking and unhooking each box, but it is easier than trying to back a box to a con gear. Takes me 20 minutes to completely hook a triple (with yard goat). What about you guys?

    if you are set up right...it should be easy for you to back straight up....


    we used to find convertor dolly, drag it to rear pup, bump it up against front of rear pup....then go find front pup /hook up...go back to rear pup..back up to convertor dolly and hook it up, (try to be no more than a foot or two from rear trailer with convertor dolly...(cuz they kick sideways easy as i am sure you know)..then you should be able to slowly back up and be all hooked up...been a while since we pulled doubles...but thats how we did it

    I never hooked using a tandem axle gear. But with the single axle gears, I'd just move them into place by hand. It really isn't that hard, unless you are on a slope.

    thats about the only reasonably quick way to do it, unless you dont mind doing a min of 10 pull ups to straighten the dolly out. in winter thats whole different story depending on ice and snow accumulation.

    You can grab your front box then your dolly then back them up together under the back box. Just takes a little while to get good at it.

    Or unless your terminal is all gravel AND sloped... Which is a lot of the time in my case. I already had to chase after enough con gear after I thought I had them secured with a big enough rock under the tire. Plus dragging them around sucks also cause the front wheel attached to the landing gear is almost always wore out.

    On a side note, I would love to know how you guys back a con gear when it is already attached to the back of another trailer.

    Most of the ones we had did not even HAVE a front wheel. You picked up the front end of the gear and pushed or pulled it where you wanted to go. As far as them rolling, sometimes you can use a glad hand to block a tire. Sometimes. . .

    As far as backing the gear when attached to a trailer? That is a tough one. It can be done, but it takes practice. I never got proficient with it. I've seen folks back sets a whole lot further than I was ever able to do, too. You think things are lined up straight. But they aren't. . .
