Is it really necessary to hold the truck in gear while waiting for the light to change? Cant I keep it in neutral until I see the light turn yellow then put it in gear.My trainer said I need to stay in gear.

I was taught to always have it in neutral when sitting still. Why wear out the throwout bearing? I would be surprised if any o/o's hold in the clutch through a full light. If your clutch brake works right the yellow light gives you lots of time to put it in low gear. Plus my left leg doesn't need any more exercise.
MJ1657 and slim shady Thank this. -
An out of gear truck is an out of control truck. Supposedly keeping it in gear allows you to pop the clutch with both hands on the wheel and move immediately in an emergency situation.

I waited at a red light today, for what seemed like forever. My leg started shaking, and I thought I was going to lose it.

Just don't throw it in neutral on a CDL road test exam because that is frowned upon as what was mentioned ... "out of control"
sdlm and TRKRSHONEY Thank this.
