Figured I would Do a Review with my Process going through Alliance Tractor Trailer to obtain my CDL here in Arden, North Carolina for those of you who may interested in getting your Commercial Drivers License such as my self. I have two reasons I will be doing this Review.
1. Those who live in NC, VA, and a couple other states should know that you have to obtain your CDL in the state you reside in for the fact of them having some law here where you cannot go to an out of state school/company sponsered school and have your CDL transferred back over with out having to test again. I forgot the specific reason, but all said and done.... Blame the Govt for that.
2. Their is a few negative Reviews Against Alliance Tractor Trailer regarding people not having their money refunded to them (Registration Fee) after failing to be able and obtain a loan.
Hopefully, I can give them a good review for a good cause for those out there besides me looking for a decent school.
My class starts the 31st of December 2012.
Information about the school I know thus far is listed below for those interested.
Upfront Fee: $495.00 For Registration. You will be sent a Receipt and some books to study along with questions to answer in the back of it prior to your school starting date. I was told if you can read you can pass, you are allowed to look up the answers, but I do how ever believe this will determine rather or not you can attend the school.
Housing: (Hotel?) 15$ a day for a total of 4 weeks and 3 weekends if you don't live close by. So, 26 days in total for me due to being tight on funds.
Personal Loan: $4,495.00. You can add onto this if you are tight on funds such as my self for having a place to stay + food if need be. Having bad credit hopefully won't be an issue for me, but I am asking to have it in writing to be refunded my money if all falls through. All I can do is pray until I know the Finial Out Come.
Training is 4 weeks with weekends off and of course bring Bedding, Food, Extra Cash, Toiletry's etc.
Now to play the waiting game - Keep you all posted!

You said, "Their is a few negative Reviews Against Alliance Tractor Trailer regarding people not having their money refunded to them (Registration Fee) after failing to be able and obtain a loan."
There should be negative reviews if they don't refund the money. Alliance should know if you will get the loan if they have done any checking at all!
That said, I used to hire drivers they trained. They were among the best out there!

The checking for the loan gets done after you pay the registration fee and answer questions in a book sent to you. I was told that you have 5 days to have your money refunded if some thing goes wrong (Registration Fee) and with that said I know my mother has bad credit. So I asked to have it in writing that if for some reason they will not be able to get us a loan, my money will be refunded to me regardless.

Feels like I am going to boot camp now, thanks!
I'm waiting for that first opportunity I get to scream on the CB telling everyone, I just came out of a CDL mill and Don't know how to back look out! -
Are you saying that if I live in Virginia (which I do) I cannot attend school in, say, Wisconsin and get a CDL there as I will have to retake the CDL test in Virginia? What a waste. There are no good schools in Virginia, without going the college course route. What to do? How about driving for the Wisconsin company for a year to satisfy the contract and then securing a job in VA, retesting then? I am confused.

Alliance has a school in Wythville,VA.
From the VA DMV Website:
"If you have an expired out-of-state CDL, you have to take all Virginia CDL tests, because in Virginia out of states tests or certificates will not be recognized."
A few months ago I was trying to apply for Central Refrigerated and a few other places and basically they said that VA,NC, and a few other states have a law where you cannot test out of the state you reside in or some crap. So if you wanted to go to that school in Wisconsin then I doubt they'll take you. That includes companies that provide their own training. Just contact an out of State Company Recruiter, tell them you're interested in going to their CDL school, state you live in and they can give you better information about it then I can. I even googl'ed it and no luck. It's just one of those ignorant State laws that shouldn't exists. Trust me on this though, money is tight and I was thinking on doing the Company Sponsored One year contract deal.
Say when I get my CDL here in North Carolina, I can work for a company that is located any where out of state. It's the law that prevents me to train and test for my CDL out side of the state that becomes the problem.
I would recommend racking up a little bit of money during X-mas and go to a local school. Why do I suggest that? Well, you get to pick and choose which company you want to apply for. The more options you have the better. Most companies will reimburse tuition up to 6Grand. Plus, you will start out making 30-31cents per mile instead of .27 graduating from their CDL mill. I say mill simply because, if you go that route then you won't get as good of training if you went to a local school.
Then again, if you're in a tough Financial Situation and can't do it, then a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do. -
Thank you Green.....I live in VA, but would not mind driving for Roehl after I graduated for a year or more....then transferred back to VA and started fresh with a VA-based company, for a regional job. In the end it's not huge money for the CDL but the school is the bigger ticket item. I really like what I am reading about Roehl so I am considering their school and staying on with them as they have lanes in VA.
Thanks for your help. My family and I just moved to Richmond from NC a year ago. Otherwise, I would be attending an NC school no doubt. I'll let you know how things progress after I call Roehl in WI this coming week. -
I've got CDS about 30 mins from home. They do a M-F 8-5 for 4 weeks with extensive job placement, so I might contact them next and just remain in VA. You caused me to think and I appreciate it!

I graduated from Alliance in January of this year (2012). I ended up not getting a truck driving job at the time as I got another job but am now looking at getting into trucking perhaps in the next few months. I will be moving out of State but know I will need to do atleast a refresher course. Alliance, I would say, is an okay school but in my opinion it is not the best out there. Alliance has trained a lot of drivers but its heyday was about 20 years ago. It is in definite decline now. They have old equipment and you can tell their financial situation is not good. I do think I received decent enough training. If you can get some training under Henry Reed, who at least when I trained only worked on the weekends you will get some good real life training. Mr. Butterick is a stickler for details and very high and mighty on himself if I do say so myself. Good luck and hope things work out for you.

I attended the now-defunct location in Dunn, NC in 1993. At that time, we had some really good instructors, and the director (Mr. Bailey) was a truly stand-up guy.
