clock ticking on new CDLs

I don't think there is an industry set "time limit" between getting your cdl and a job with a carrier. I'm pretty sure it varies from company to company. Do you have any pre-hires? If you do, i'd be on the phone TODAY...it's already been a month...calling those companies and asking them, or calling the companies that you are interested in working for if you don't.

 

Six months is usually the limit... what's next? Depends on the company... anywhere from do the entire CDL process again to a refresher course. The usual determinant is whether you had ANY experience at all. Get crackin'!!!

 

yeah get on it ASAP.....my company has a decent training program with above average starting pay....you can check out some of the threads on here for "conway truckload" out of Joplin Mo.

 

all companies require that you provide last 10 years of work history. if there are any gaps in employment, you are required to account for them, and provide names and phone numbers of those that can verify the gaps. not sure why, but it is what it is. of course, some companies may take a dimmer view of gaps than others, but a month or 2 shouldnt be a huge deal. just make sure to call a couple friends and tell them to expect a phone call or 8, then list them as references on your application(s). since you were basically taught in school how to pass the cdl test, and not much else, they dont expect a whole awful lot from a new driver...thats why they have you go out with a trainer to teach you the real job.

 

and conway was a good company in my experience as well. but id think twice about running teams with them...the 3 teams i talked to all said 5000 miles was a good week for them.

 

Hey Im from kansas city,mo but now live in tampa florida I have a cdl class A havent driven a class A since 2005 I have been driveing for greyhound in the past 7 yrs what are the laws on the refresher course and do I have to go threw training all over again.thank you

 

This question is of interest to me because I'm trying to time when I should get my private CDL schooling.
I can retire/layoff from my current career with severence package as early as March, but my first daughter is getting married in June. I'll need to leave before June because I need the severence money to pay for school and wedding, as well as home repairs before guests.
So, I'm trying to decide if I leave my job, go to school, get my CDL around April and I wait until after the wedding to start with a company if that would be too long.

Alternativly, I could collect unemployment between leaving job and wedding, then start school late June/July, but by then I would just be going solo about the time winter driving hits.

What are your ideas?

 

For some companies there is a 60 to 90 day window from graduation...

Same thing happened with my ex after he got his CDL end of November 09 and finished up some things and didn't apply until around this time in 2010. He applied at starter companies and got some help thru his CDL school -ended up USX. The clock was ticking and most companies as PMracing and ironponey said do not want you to wait that long or else you ''have forgotten how to drive.'' Most companies will want you take a refresher course (no matter how long you have been driving) if you have gone local or off OTR for more than 6 months (because by goodness sake you ''really'' did forget how to drive!!
