If you want to team, you can get in the 40s from some companies... but those same companies are terrible for solo... like US Xpress.

Werner is just above the middle, their pay is $38k average... while crete tops out at about $53k average...

I think its more of comfort... I dont like companies with crazy idle restrictions and forced routing... and other stupid rules. US Xpress had all the stupid rules that Crete has, but none of the pay that Crete has.

Werner is actually decent for experience drivers and after the first year you get treated pretty nicely. 6 months was like night and day...

For instance, Crete pays less for dedicated runs... they offered me 36cpm with one yea experience... I already make that at Werner so why would I leave? Ive even been offered 38cpm and relocation by Werner... no reason to leave now. So even the best still have some stupid things about them...

    Probably Maverick glass division.
Don't just look at pay per mile; look at assessorial pays; these pays add up to a lot of money annually. Some commpanies such as tanker/hazmat, you can make over $60K per year, but the pay per mile may be only .36 cpm. The assessorial pays make the difference, plus you don't sit for hours waiting to load or unload or hoping your company finds a load for you. Hard working flatbed drivers make over $50K per year. You might make $80.00 a week just in tarp pay alone.

Being new to all of this. If you are driving at 40 cpm but are governed at 62 mph are tarping a lot, flatbed but getting held up for hours at a shipper or company is giving you a delivery date that is one day early so you sit a day once you arrive....is it best to change companies if you only have 5 months in.? Working 6 weeks out and 4 days home and money doesn't feel so great....

Are you being paid for on duty not driving activities and demurrage? More importantly though, are you making enough money to cover your financial obligations? If you are going into debt to cover your essentials I would definitely start looking. If not, I would make every effort to stick it out a year. Spending 6 weeks out and only getting 4 days off is pretty horrid though.

I'd also second what Chinatown said about accessorial pay. I often make just as much in layover, demurrage and bunk pay as I do in mileage. Sometimes more if I only end up with 1000 miles for the week with 2 or 3 days of layover pay.

I sneaked around the nation. They didn't like that. Kept my truck to clean, they said. Promote him to safety. Fired. C.L. said nothing. Be careful what you wish for.

When we have a layover, the first 14hrs are free, then paid hourly up to 10hrs at our hourly rate. Next 14 free, 10 paid etc etc. Demurrage - first 2 hrs loading or unloading is $20. Anything over 2 hrs is paid at the hourly rate. Bunk pay is a just flat $10/day to sleep in the truck. Doesn't sound like much, but it adds up though when you figure I slept in the truck 245 nights last year...

I think what we get paid for is pretty well standard amongst most chemical tanker companies. IMO it should be standard across the entire industry.

Both david's posts are right on.
Your husband probably isn't getting the hourly pay for detention or layover pay or other pays. He needs to change companies when he can. Don't jump ship though until he has something locked in.

Tanker/hazmat companies are best & a few flatbed companies are good. Research some flatbed websites to find the good ones.
