I am wondering if there are some places drivers wont go. I have done a lot of traveling in the states and other countries and have seen some really awesome places and seen some places that were places I would not like to ever see again.
If I get into trucking I plan on having my wife with me as a ride along and maybe a team driver with me. I have also seen that there are a lot of women drivers out there and wonder if they have felt uneasy in certain places as well as men drivers.
Seems like a lot of bad areas out there and just curious if anyone has info on this.

This lady has never felt scared delivering and staying in some really bad areas.Ive took my brks in NYC,Long Island,Huntspoint a block from a bar in Queens.some horrible trk stops,Chicago and never felt uneasy.Never even thought about it.Nothing ruined my sleep.

Depends on your definition of bad area.I have areas I don't want to go because loads out are few and far between and pay next to nothing. There are customers in nice neighborhoods that I will not go to because of their attitude or wait times.Maybe its a weather issue for you, maybe traffic if its just an all around safe feeling issue look at it this way.You can get mugged or killed in even the nicest of neighborhoods.I've spent time in the five boroughs of NYC and never been bothered.I spent time in out of the way country parts of the country and been approched by dealers and prostitutes.Stay alert and keep your truck secure and you'll be ok

Apparently PattyJ is one tough chick.....because I am 6'2" and 250lbs. and grew up fighting---and there are plenty of places that put me on edge, or made me uncomfortable/nervous and yes, even ruined my sleep. Guess I'm just a wuss.
dennisroc; you are most likely not gonna have much choice as to where you will be sent (take the load they give you), so the secret is, good planning. Call shippers/receivers ahead of time and ask if they have secure overnight parking---if not, stay somewhere else, and roll in at your appointment time.
As far as "seedy" truck stops go...walk with a purpose, look confident, and try to get all your inside business taken care of before dark; then just stay in your truck.
Common sense is your biggest tool to survival.
There are plenty of threads on this board that discuss which truck stops have the worst reputations....search 'truckstops' or 'truck stops' and read away.NavigatorWife and dennisroc Thank this. -
I won't go to NYC....not because of any "bad" areas, I just won't go there period. No problem with Chicago or other large cities.dennisroc Thanks this.

Detroit is bad for sure

only place i can speak to. is los angeles. some of them tanker facilities can be in some pretty rough neighborhoods.

Fear not. As said, avoid the well known seedy truck stops, and you'll be OK. We've been all through LA, NYC, Detroit . . . worst comes to worst you jump in the truck, lock doors and call the feds.

Plan what looks to be the best route into a bad area, go straight there, mind your own business, pay attention to what is going on around you,do what you have to do, go straight out. Use common sense,if you feel a problem is developing, trust your instinct.
