What's the best way to go about chaining up? After I get my chains on, I roll about 15-20 ft forward and retighten all my chains as tight as I can get them. Somehow, last winter season I still managed to snap five cross-member strands on two tire chains. I usually only wear them on heavy snow packed roads so the asphalt doesn't eat through the chains too much. Also, I keep mine on usually around 50-100 miles at most with an average speed of about 55-60 MPH. Most of my company drivers do about the same and fair better than me. They tell me I don't have them tight enough or that my chains are just too old and rusted. Any ideas?

I think the speed is your bigger problem assuming you are tightening them the prescribed way and in the right direction and the cam holds closed. I will never run chains faster then 45 MPH

Yeah, they keep telling me that I don't have them tight enough. I run LTL and they expect us to get there faster than averaging 35 MPH. I am usually out there by myself at night and going faster than 35 is comfortable for me. Again, any good methods to getting your chains tighter?

Um, no. You should never run chains at 55-60. That's insane.

Yes. Slow down. It doesn't matter that you're "comfortable" running at 60 with chains. That's not what they are designed for.

Do you have any idea how badly you're wearing the tires? Let alone the chains? 35 max that is it. You run 55-60 on chains for 50-100 miles you're asking for a catastrophic failure of your tires and chains. Oh my god I can't believe you haven't gotten into a serious accident yet.

Nope. No accidents here. Aside from snapping five strands, my tires are doing fine. :biggrin_25520:

The real statement should be no accidents yet. you ask any old timer that question and he'll look at you like you have 10 heads.
