I'd like to be at a $2.50 or better average to the truck (read that: after their percentage comes off the top and after deadhead is factored in) on around 70,000 hub miles annually. That's a tall order pulling a dry van though. I hate to sit here and say "yeah you need to get $2 a mile or better" because a lot of folks misinterpret a general statement like that. Many drivers and even worse brokers misinterpret it. Brokers will always try to sell you on the fact that $2 a mile is a great rate regardless of length of haul. Drivers will many times jump on a rate like that, especially if it's a longer haul. Someone always has to pay for the deadhead. If you're booking a lot of $2 a mile on "loaded miles only" - you're the one who's gonna eat it.

Currently I am leasing a truck, YES LEASING a truck with a company. Get .90 mile plus surcharge loaded and empty. Virtually no "slow time" with freight we haul. Truck payment runs $466 wk. Truck averages 5.5 mpg. Didn't plan on getting into lease to pay the truck off, mainly did it for as close to first hand experience to owning a truck. (Father did it for 20+ years). Average take home is $1200 wk. Question is, would it be better to purchase a truck to run here for at least a year since I know how it works over here and focuse on running "my own truck" keeping in mind that payments should be lower and looking for a more fuel efficient truck, or make the best decision possible on another company or full out own authority plus truck payment paperwork ex.. Want to move forward taking baby steps, but not step in place!
