I'm not sure if this is exactly where I should put this, but I figured since this was a reefer forum, I'd try it. My dad, who has been a reefer driver for almost all of his 34 years in trucking, perpetuates this sort of "myth" that reefer trucks always stick together on truck stop lots, and that dry vans, tankers, flatbeds, and everybody else hates reefers and tries to stay away from them. Is this really true? Right now we are at a truck stop for the night and we are one of four or five reefers in a line. Do reefers coming on and off during the night really irritate other non-reefer drivers? And will people who hate reefer noise really go out and shut one off in the middle of the night because they are so annoyed with it? If any of you have any other reefer myths or legends, put them here for me, please

This isn't rocket science , yes a reefer may be annoying to some but this is trucking. I've never heard of someone having their reefer shut off. I'm sure my die
sel APU may annoy people too , if people are that sensitive they should move to another spot, lately I've been noticing people driving into spots instead of backing in, maybe to isolate the sounds or more than likely because of lack of experience backing in. Maybe a bit of each.Great Plains Transport and Tb0n3 Thank this. -
sitting next to a reefer at the moment.....thanks for asking.
1. yes, while I do not "hate" a reefer, I'd prefer not to be parked next to one.
2. actually, I sleep like a log. Once I've gone to sleep, a reefer, nor anything else (noise wise) will wake me up.
3. I would never touch another man's truck for any reason......unless it was to help in some way.
I honestly feel sorry for the reefer dudes......they got to listen to that crap every night. Me, maybe once or twice a week. Frankly, those TriPacks are more annoying, or just as much anyway.650cat425, Auctioneer, Great Plains Transport and 4 others Thank this. -
I pulled reefer for 2.5 yrs, and I had someone shut mine off during the night twice. I'm a chain-smoker and I usually wake up every 3 or 4 hrs to smoke, so both times I caught it before any damage was done. People are ### holes and it does happen.

There are rare occassions where another driver will turn off a reefer and many of them have no teeth left.
Same with stealing chains and binders from flatbed drivers; those thieves when caught usually end up wearing dentures and casts on their arms. Some are on disability because their fingers and hands are too damaged to ever be of much use again. I know a driver that caught someone stealing his chains off a loaded trailer; he knocked the guy to the pavement then crushed his hands, wrists, fingers with the cheater bar.slow.rider, Joescheppae Q, Broke Down 69 and 6 others Thank this. -
I try to park next to Other Reefers when I can..
Lots of other drivers don't like when I park next to them..but what can I do..we're all kinda doing the same job anyway.Great Plains Transport and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Interesting posts here. My dad said he's never had someone turn his reefer off in the middle of the night. Lucky for him. Who ever up there said TriPacs were annoying, obviously hasn't been fortunate enough to park next to a Rigblaster. Those things have got to be the loudest, most obnoxious things in a truck stop. In fact just the other day we stopped for the night and a Rigmaster parked a couple trucks down from us. I swear you could hear that thing rattling away, even with a reefer and a truck idling between us and it. I have read about the noise levels of different APUs, and TriPacs are considered by far to be the quietest. Even those rattletrap Carriers are louder than TriPacs. Just saying.

Never had one shut off. . But trucks do usually stick together. .
Bull wagons..reefers..grain wagons. .rock haulers and door swingers. . Reminds me of the"clicks" in high school. Ugh!Joescheppae Q, Isafarmboy, Shaggy and 1 other person Thank this. -
I have been driving refer for 20+ years I try to park by other refers when I can because hopefully they are used to the noise. However the only time I have had my refer shut off was by other refer drivers from a CD mill company. Both times my refer was shut off I was pushing it to the limit and was past the maintenance point and refer was louder than should be. I can say that the hardest time I have sleeping is when I'm hauling dry goods and refer is off. I wake up often because there is no noise. When I'm hauling dry I try to park by a louder refer so I can sleep.

I would always look for a bull hauler with his windows down to park next to. It wouldn't take long for him to move. My switch was mounted on the inside of my reefer so that no one but myself could access it.
TriPac Dude Thanks this.
