First of all... Hi there! I'm new here. =P

Okay, down to the real stuff. I'll pretty much just cut to the chase.

So I'm a 25 year old guy married to a 21 year old woman. We're looking into trucking because it sounds like fun - traveling the country, being together, etc... - and primarily because my wife and I want to start a business. The problem is that the business requires quite a bit of financial capital to start. Being a team, would we be able to save up a lot of extra cash by being in this business? Looking to the tune of $50k in two years'ish. Basically, I know a guy (an acquaintance) who is a trucker, and what he told me is that if he weren't paying alimony and/or child support, he would most likely be raking in $60k/year in what he called, "spending money". I cannot imagine that's a real number...is it?

As of right now, my wife is a nanny and I'm a server at a restaurant. We currently make about $1,000/week after taxes, but living in LA is REALLY expensive. With trucking, would we be able to cut down on those expenses to the point at which we would only be spending what we had to? In this business, other than food, lodging, etc... what expenses do most people have?

That's all I can think of for now... Thank you! =D

Are you looking to sell your house while on the road and live in the truck?
Do you have $6k for CDL school?
Do you have other debt or family obligations?

    I don't have a house. I have an apartment. It's Los Angeles.

As for moving out of California, not really. My family lives here, and my prospective business would do best in a large, chic, metropolitan area.

Again, though, we live in an apartment, so if we became truckers, we would simply live in the cab to cut down on ALL other expenses.

OP.... the way I see it the best game plan would be as follows:

    1. You and your GF get your CDL's.

    2. You and your GF work as company drivers, as a team.

    3. You sell everything that doesn't fit in a truck.

    4. You live on the road, in the truck, working as company drivers. When you want "home time" you get a hotel or motel or stay at friends or relatives.

    5. After 3-5 years you will have enough saved up to buy your own truck with sufficient capital for maintenance reserve and operations AND you will have 3-5 years experience.

Many a couple have lived "on the road" for years in order to reach their financial goals, whether it was becoming O/O's or purchasing a house without resorting to getting a mortgage.

Have you given any consideration to what you're going to do if you, or your girlfriend fail to get your CDL and hired by a company?
    It happens quite often.
