NPR had a story on this accident. The CHP spokesperson said it would take a minimum of 3 months and up to 6 months before they release their report.

I've heard conflicting reports regarding the automobile(s?) involved in the accident. Some say the car was in the northbound lane with the bus, others say it was in the southbound lane with the truck. I'll be interested to see what the final report has to say about this accident.

One thing about that stretch of freeway, with the intermittent tall shrubs in the median it's difficult to see anything developing on the other side of the freeway. I'd imagine the truck popped through those shrubs in a hurry, without much time at all for evasive actions by the bus driver.

    gpsman Thanks this.

Guntoter, our job as truck drivers is to make those decisions as they happen.

I've been told before, if someone's going to hit you, let them hit you. At least trading paint means another vehicle was involved. Steering out of the way and causing a bigger problem (which the instigator conveniently drives away) is going to come back on you.

And with all those scenarios, crossing the median is never a correct choice in an accident-avoidance scenario.

AND the reason so many are critical of FedEx is because we deal with them on a daily basis. Their driving habits, styles, speeds, etc are well known. I'm always nervous when near a FedEx, because I can assured of a few things: driving fast, tailgating a car in front of them, and that insistent wiggle of the last trailer because they're too impatient to keep it straight.

And to all the good FedEx drivers out there, I'm sorry you're cast in with the lot, but I'm sure even you know the public perception (and the trucking world perception) of your brethren.

It wasn't recruiting. They where accepted to and going to attend Humboldt state. This was a 3 day get to know your new school event so they where not in complete culture shock next fall. Lots of schools hold these kind of events.

They were low income students , withoutthe bus ride they probably would have never been given the opportunity to go visit a college.

The foliage along CA highways, apparently deliberately planted to block motorist's views of entrance ramps, has long baffled me. CA can't afford to dare to dream of a pot to piss in, and they have platoons of landscapers out there tending their living road hazards.

Can't say it's not pretty when it's not covered in blood.

FedEx Freight drivers are paid mileage when driving, if they work the dock they are paid hourly.
This was a horrific accident, we may never know the cause of this accident. Prayers for all involved and there families.
When I worked for FDX. FRT. I was always passed by the FDX. Ground guys.
