I was looking at a used step in great condition, but the more I read on here, it seems like flat is the way to go with Mercer. Would it be worth having buying the step and a flatbed for different times of the year? I want to make sure I am versatile so I can maximize my revenue.

You don't need a step and flat. I would talk with Mercer and ask them which would be better in your situation. Often, it is the lanes you run which will determine which type of trailer is best. I have both step and flat. I tend to do better with the step, but there are times when I could do well with a flat. Some shippers will not load a step. There are some shippers that need a step for some loads. It depends on what you plan on hauling. If it were me, I would probably start with a flat and if you see that you can do better pulling a step, you can always sell the flat and buy a step deck. Flats can be purchased for much less than a step.

Was able to meet up with a Mercer driver today here in San Antonio. Ran into him at the Flying J. His truck number was 7440 and he was a very nice to us. We asked him if we could have 5 minutes of his time to talk about Mercer and he gladly jumped out of his truck and talk to us. We ended up talking for over an hour. He was very knowledgeable and very positive about Mercer. He asked me a lot of questions about where I wanted to run, what I was going to pull (Step or Flat). I asked him the same question I did on here and he said the same thing as you G/MAN. I will start off with a flat for the first year. If I feel I can do better with a step after that, I will go ahead and buy one. It was great being able to shoot the breeze with this old boy today. If any of you know him, please pass along my thanks for being so kind to take the time to talk to us today. I can't wait to get into orientation and get on the road so I can meet more folks like him and hopefully most of you from here.

That is great. It helps to speak with someone currently leased to a carrier when trying to get accurate information. I have had an opportunity to speak with several Mercer owner operator over the years. Most seem to be happy with the company.
