Of course they have their downsides, but all companies do. Overall, they were a good outfit to work for.

Thanks for all the replies guys. There are a lot of LTL freight companies that are hiring P&D drivers in my area. The reason I asked about the unloading is because that part is the only thing that scares me away from that job. I'm a small build guy unfortunately. I've worked in warehouses my whole life and have no issues with labor intensive jobs. However in warehouses you only have to lift one case at a time, and you always have your electric pallet jack or forklift with you if need be. I've had a short experience helping with a food delivery gig where we used hand trucks to bring product through kitchens, into freezers, up steps, etc. and it did not go well. I was helping a driver at the time and he would stack so many items on the hand truck that I could barely even tip it back onto the wheels, and going up stairs was literally impossible for some of the loads he put on the hand truck. Now some people would think "So why not just take a couple extra trips in ...?" well at the gig I had you didn't have time for a couple extra trips. Especially when you have hospitals and businesses where you had to go up an elevator.

I would definitely choose linehaul over P&D as some of you were suggesting. However, in my area there are not many linehaul positions, and the ones that are open are usually always taken with seniority by current employees of the company ... they rarely ever open up linehaul positions to the public.

I don't know ... maybe I'll have to settle for a soda gig until something more my style comes along.

Errr... I filled in for P&D when some of the guys decided to go fishing. I've experienced it all. Good days you would back your trailer to a dock and they would load/unload you. Bad days are 2k lbs pallets of clay for the high school that you had to push with a pallet jack. Some areas don't have docks and it is all liftgate. Worse case scenario for me was unloading 180 tyres by hand that were going to the local tyre dealerships. Backbreaking work.

I've never done COD. All of our freight is prepaid.

I am also sticking to linehaul.

I dealt with a lot of tires, from your local tire dealer, to commercial tires to big construction tires. They all handle a bit differently. As far as off loading regular tires, once you get the hang of it, it is easy and goes fast. Particularly if the tire shop has a "catcher" who knows what he is doing.

Dealing with heavy equipment tires, is a different game altogether though. Fun times. NOT.

LTL is a variety, for sure, as is the customer base. One thing to note, you will also pick-up outbound freight from your customers as the day goes. So, now, you're moving freight around inside your trailer as the day goes along. Anything from warehouse dock to 12th floor in an office bldg. Loved those "inside deliveries" especially a pallet of copy paper and the receptionist telling me to " just put them in that closet back down that hallway".

Riiiiiight, lady. Do you want me to load your copy machines as well?:biggrin_2554:

I had a delivery to a Payless Shoe store where this (very new & very short lasting) manager told me to separate the shoe boxes out so that the color key on the boxes was all the same. Sorry, isn't going to happen. "Well they told me at a manager's meeting that you would." Sorry, isn't going to happen. "WELL, then I'm going to CALL MY SUPERVISOR." Fine, go ahead. Meanwhile, I will be reloading them back into my truck. "But but but We NEED those shoes." No problem, count the number of cartons, sign the bill and everything will be good. "You aren't gonna sort those out for me are you." No ma'am, I'm not. I don't have the time, nor the patience, nor does my company pay me to do that. All I do is deliver them.

She signed the BOL, and was on the phone to her district supervisor as I was leaving. Next time I went there, she was gone. . .:yes2557: People will try anything to get out of doing their jobs.

Normally, I was pretty easy going, but there was no way I was gonna get that crap started. Once it starts, it never stops. Then they expect it, and are calling in to the company and complaining about the driver. . .

We also did a lot of hospitality deliveries. Almost all the hotels and motels were extremely reasonable. Driver gets it off the truck, the maintenance folks take it from there. EXCEPT a couple of places where they had contracts for inside delivery. Now I didn't mind the inside delivery, except where you had to go through their main lobby to get the stuff to where they wanted it - In rain or snow, and there is the head housekeeper screaming at you for dragging mud/snow/moisture in on her carpet. Hey lady, if you had a service door, with a paved area for parking, this wouldn't happen. In fact, if you hadn't pitched a fit one time when I parked on the driveway near the entrance, this wouldn't happen. But you want me to park in that mud hole back there, and then keep your carpet clean? Sorry, ain't likely to happen.

Thanks! I'll definitely have to keep them in mind. There's a terminal in Sparks, next door.
