LTL appears the be among the best paying jobs and offer the most home time even though the same routes daily probably get monotonous quickly. My question is:
1. assuming that LTL operators do not assign trucks to drivers then how do you deal with a CB radio? Do you bring your own with a power outlet adapter and use a magnetic antenna?
2. Due line haul trucks even have AM/FM?
3. I know that you can download an app for Sirius/XM for your smartphone but I wonder if ear buds or open headphones are prohibited by DOT or the companies.
I used to drive OTR years ago when I felt privileged to have AM/FM with an 8 TRK player! I can't imagine driving OTR or line haul without satellite radio these days.
So what do you drivers do?
Slip seating and radios!

Most have a box with cb, stereo and speakers built in.
Run your vice grip antenna out the door and truck on! -
Honestly, I don't have, want, or need a cb. It's just not needed, IMO. However, if you do want a cb and you're not assigned a tractor can you imagine the pain in the butt it's going to be dragging one in/out of the truck everyday along with the rest of your stuff.

I drive line haul, truck has a cobra 29.... I bring my own mic. Truck has a concert class am/fm/cd with xm, weather band, an ipod dock and aux input. This is standard on all our trucks but I understand this is the exception not the rule. Someone makes a little device called a ltl radio box. Its powered by the cig. lighter, holds a cb radio, an am/fm radio head and has a couple speakers on it. You use one of those vice~grip mirror mounts for the antenna. I can't remember who makes it and I've only seen one in the I80 catalog but google should know.

I do short haul into NYC, and we slip seat. I have enough to deal with when it comes to driving that a CB radio and / or satellite radio aren't very high on my 'must have' list. Some of our trucks have them, some don't. I could bring my own, but that would just add more unpaid time to my day, getting them in and out of the truck...

My buddy bought a handheld one with a short antenna. He says its half way decent and uses it in his 4 wheeler. If you must have a cb, thats a good option. Nothing to plug in.
Shaggy and road_runner Thank this. -
Weird guy, crack the window and silence, First started out doing non LTL, ( 1st shift guy ) had every possible gadget available thinking he was OTR. Changed the radio station and the world collapsed. Heard it from management and from the driver. if a CB is available not mine, I don't touch it. Early on taught me, Slip seating sucks and not worth beating the crap out of coworker for being petty whiny sissy snitch. Not mine, Don't touch it.
I do P&D. occasionally get a road drivers tractor. not mine, don't touch equipment inside still applies. yet, some folks are still not happy leaving it better then i found it. Have fun with your garbage
Some folks just need a good ole fashion ### whooping in the yard.Cottonmouth85, jimbo47 and road_runner Thank this. -
My tractor is assigned to me, but I don't mind if a fellow city man uses it when im done with it, unless it gets smoked in or left with garbage

I'm lucky I got to bid on a tractor but during the day city uses it.
Shaggy Thanks this. -
I found one of those hand helds doing roll off dumpster. This thing was awesome, until extending the antenna in the cab. No joke, this antenna had to be at least 36"
It has 8 or 12 Double A batteries. Practical use as a driver at the landfill communicating with the operators no. Out side of cab was ideal.
not a radio person, The long antenna had to be made for non truckers lol.
Thanks for the flashback.
