My understanding is during orientation trucking companies will have you do a road test and backing up test. I just graduated trucking school, and the backing up practice we did was just enough to pass the Texas CDL test. I am a bit nervous about what kind of backing up they will have me do during orientation. I hear stories about getting sent home because of a lack of backing skills.

Any idea who you'll be driving for?I wouldn't worry too much about the backing test.More then likely you'll only have to do the driving portion and what the instructor will be doing is seeing how u handle a semi on the road and won't fail you for a bad shift. The backing part will probably come once your training is done,in a couple months.

Yeah, what he said. Try not to be nervous, even though you will be. You'll be fine.

Thanks y'all. I appreciate the vote of confidence. I am starting with SRT since I live in Texarkana and their home office is here.

Nobody is a" born backer - upper". We all had to learn. It takes time to develop that skill. There are days I cannot back worth a darn, and others I an proud of my ability to put a trailer anywhere there is room.
It takes practice, and these companies know it. Just take your time, GOAL, and practice every chance you get. You will be OK.

I would assume you are going to be a NEW driver at SRT and hince you will be with a trainer for a few weeks. If that is whats happening then you will not take the drive test till after the training and you will be more comfy doing it then if you have a good trainer. My trainer would always have me back at every stop even when it was his drive time. I must have backed over 200 times by the end of the 2 months i was with him :)

In orientation now they have maneuvers set up like a theme park you walk around the lot with 12 other students who made it to the second week and practice your maneuvers and theirs about three instructors who walk around and help the people or critique them who are struggling at the end of the day they give you a report card on how you did. Maneuvers are 45 degree back, serpentine, figure 8, 90 degree back, straight line back. It's not really pass or fail they just want to see that your progressing have a grasp on the maneuver. They rather you do 100 pull ups and goals then hit a cone.

The three I have gone to one had me back into dock any set up I wanted, did straight line back. Guy doing road test said he didn't blame me. Other two was ally docks but couldn't do straight line so had to do 90

Just drove by their terminal the other night. Mine had me back up and do road test even before going with trainer. First job out of school. Was given some leeway

Congratulations on getting your CDL !

SRT tried to charge a drivers family last year to get his body back after he died over the road. Start putting aside money.
