I live in Tennessee and I would like any advice, info on any good companies to drive for, just starting out. I drove dual axle tandem dump trucks for several years back in 2000 and did have a class A CDL with Haz Mat, but let it go because I didn't use it after that, my big mistake. Now, I have to enroll in truck driver training school locally so I can get the training I need. I hope to enroll very soon, just waiting to hear back about the financing.
I have an 11 month old foster baby girl that my wife and I hope to adopt so my main benefit at any company would be home time. I have been looking at a few companies to drive for after I get out of training; Averitt, US Xpress, etc, but would really like more recommendations, advice and questions to ask potential companies.
Do any of the companies pre-hire you before you start a school? I have heard a lot of horror stories about getting a company to pay for your schooling and the contract they get you to sign to do so, and the conditions of the signed contract, but would like any information anyone could give in respect to that as well.
I am happy to get back to driving and for the first time in a big rig. I want to provide the best I can for my wife and little girl especially and I really appreciate any advice from anyone before I make any decisions.

My advice is to find a local job. I would not recommend going OTR with an 11 month at home.

I appreciate that advice very much. I have been looking over a few companies that have regional and dedicated runs that is supposed to get you home on the weekends, but you know how that can be. So, far, I have sent in applications online to Averitt before I even start driving school to see what they have to say. I was considering Schneider, but I am wondering about them now after the comments I have read on here about home time. I am still looking to see what other companies the other truckers advise may be good to talk to about positions for me.

    Thanks Again!

Well - I'm always going to push my company, but it would be a good fit for you.

Lately, I've seen two solo drivers hired out of CDL school.

I believe we have a terminal there in Bristol (?).

I'd make a personal call, ask if there's a reccmended CDL school, pay it yourself - and progress down the LTL path.

Any LTL. Not necessarily ODFL. With wife and young one at home, OTR will have you missing out on far too much. B.

US Express is better for teams ...

IMHO if your big concern is home time OTR Trucking is not for you...

Averitt will tell you to call when you get in school if they return your call

If your into a night job you may want to look into grocery stores and which trucking company stocks them. You go back and forth between warehouse and stores. Home every day. If your near a beer plant, same thing.

Obviously, you need a source of income. However one thing to think about is that you hope to adopt a baby girl. You will need to be home for that. You don't want to lose the chance because you are gone. I would look at local operations where you are home every day. Gasoline / Oil carriers are just that type of operation.

Drive the interstates in your area and look at the names on the side of the day cabs that you see. Call those companies.
