So many threads with this same question. It really comes down to how much data you need and what you plan on doing with it.

I have to admit that I, too, am considering getting a hotspot. My laptop has wifi access, but I don't know about how good the one in the truck will be yet. I am looking for cheap but good, too....don't really have too much money to throw around...sort of what caused my housemate to go back OTR. If anyone else has any good suggestions, let me know. I already have a Verizon plan, but it is a prepay per month plan.

This is Verizon service (bulk reseller), cheaper ($89), more data allowance (20 gig), no contract, no service or billing issues, can turn on/off for example if you truck half the year (storm chasers use them primarily) plus if you do go over on data usage on rare occasion, they'll let it slide and not penalize you like Verizon will.

Many choose to use this as their primary data source then have a cell phone w/ data plan on other carrier (ATT) as a backup option in rare areas where ATT performs better

Well I can tell you, if you have a smartphone like i have an iPhone w/ Verizon grandfathered into unlimited all i did was jailbreak it and i tether all i want (hot spot) same thing. With an android take it to get rooted so you can add a tethering app and it will be free of charge 10-four?

I don't have a smartphone, just one of those cheap jobbies that you can get at the dollar store. When I got it, I couldn't afford to pay a whole lot for a phone...anything more than 20 dollars was too rich for my blood, at that time. So, I figure I need to get a mobile hotspot, since my phone can't pick it up.

don't need to be rooted to have a tether app. foxfi has been out for years. and other apps.

unless you want your own flavored rom on your phone. root is pretty much ueseless these days. as android has pretty much thrown in everything we needed root for in the first place. and most of the other apps don't require root anymore.

that's not to say that there aren't some apps that still require it. but that does with the territory of installing your own rom.

Foxfi doesn't work on some of the new phones. I've yet to get it to work on my s5, and it was sketchy at best on my s3.
