Ok.. being that I'm somewhat anonymous here I'm going to put it all out there then ask what you think my chances are at being allowed to make a go at driving a truck.

    The good ( I think )

I am 28 years old, in perfect health (I think :) ) I had a DOT Physical about a year ago and everything was on the up and up. I don't do drugs of any kind nor do I drink. I'm a pretty intelligent person, in my opinion of course, and passing the test or learning the skills required will be a non-issue. I have the money to pay for my school up-front and have a solid 730ish credit score... (its up and down by 40pts/month lol) My work history is solid, never been fired or laid off, and have owned my own legitimate businesses as well. So thats the good me in a nut shell...

    Then the bad. :/

I have three criminal charges total in my past.

    1. I plead no contest to a class D Felony (receiving Stolen Property) in 2006, it was diverted, and then it was expunged from the record. The order of expungement says specifically that the actions alleged to have occurred are to never be acknowledged as having occurred nor are the arrests, charges or hearings. If inquired about, the courts and agencies which were involved shall have no record of such events ever occurring. --- So, a little gray area.
    2. I have a misdemeanor receiving stolen property from 2010, probation ended summer 2011. The charge stems from an employee of mine (who was on parole) had picked up some rusted out "thing" (I really have no clue) from a dumpster... Then picked me up in the work truck with the thing in the bed on the truck... Get pulled over. The dumpster "owner" claimed the item was taken from their property after having the vehicle followed. possession is Prima Facie evidence... Meaning if I couldn't prove I didn't steal it, then I did.
    3. misdemeanor Non-Support in 2011. wrote the wrong address on the envelope and was arrested being 11 days late. No excuse, may fault.

So there it is... What are the odds? I know that there is (or was) upward pressure on rates from limited capacity. In theory, I hope anyway, that trucking companies would loosen criteria enough for a good guy like me to get in there. I was looking at Knight Transport, seeing as their the only people I found who post their eligibility and I *seemingly qualify.. And I'd be willing to drop the 3,500 or 4K on the school if it meant having actual employment and getting some space from my hometown.

So whats the prognosis? I'd be willing to team... (So long as my team-mate was clean and could hold a conversation) I could go OTR for as long as needed.

    Need some feedback asap,

No problem getting a job in trucking.
Attend a good 160 hr. CDL school.
Community college CDL schools are the cheapest.
With the criminal record, the CDL school may require pre-hire letters from 1 or 2 companies before letting you register, but that's no problem either.

Put your location in your profile. We néed some info since some companies have areas that they don't hire in. You should have no trouble finding work. Just might not be the best of the best to begin with.

Well, welcome to the forum. Keep your thick skin with you, things get heated at times. Check out the forum rules to keep yourself on track.

The criminal charges as described sound nit-picky to me. However, the trucking companies will be looking at them, and the recieving charge might not fare well for some, given that they are trusting you with $$$ of equipment, freight, fuel etc.

That being said, if they're willing to discuss the charges in depth with you, rather than just toss your application in the trash, then you should be OK. Turning up in person, clean dressed, firm handshake and one on one discussion should help out here.

You didn't mention your driving record. Anything to worry about there? DUI's, 15+ speeding tickets, DQ's . . . ?

Yes, drivers are in demand. No question about that. Many companies to choose from - and in my opinion you have a lot better options paying for your own schooling. Sync this up with prospective companies - some only accept drivers from certain schools. Some companies pay you back for your school over time too.

You'll probably be looking at a training period of solo with trainer/ super solo / team driving or a combination thereof before you're left to your own devices.

A few brains will sure help, as you appear to have. Not everybody is suited to the job, but you'll find out one way or the other when you get your tootsies wet.

Adjust your profile to list your location, that way we can help find some solutions within your proximity.

    Cheers, B.

OK... Thanks for the responses. I updated the location... kinda lol.

About the 160-hour schools... Community colleges and what-not. While I know would probably be the best bet generally. At the moment, I'm kind of in the position where I need to have an employment guarantee. I would certainly hate to drop $3,600 (local college rate) and then a month from now have a $3,600 card in my pocket with no job. I need a mutual agreement lol. "If you pass the training, you have a job." lol.. It's wierd, my predicament specifically. I don't really care about how much I make in the beginning (to an extent) I just need the employment guaruntee as a condition of training... if that makes any sense.

China - did you attend a speed typing course?

I see - near Nashville. Lots of options there. Good central location.

Needsomeadvice - what kind of operation were you looking at - van/reefer/flatbed/LTL . . . want to be home regular or out for months?

Yes - makes sense. That would be my biggest concern if I were you. The general consensus with these companies is that you're not actually hired until you're in the truck, solo, and trained. All other 'guarantees' are void. They'll tell you you're 'hired', then send you home from orientation/training for some reason or other. Most of the time it's failed drug screens or falsifying applications.

Be upfront and honest about anything you know to be public or accessible record on your history.

Well, I don't want to over generalize and say "Whatever I can get", but initially I would take... "Whatever I can get". In the long-run, Ideally I'd haul Flat and/or difficult loads.(?) Just because I have a need to feel like my brain is of use when working. Whichever is the most challenging would peak my interest naturally. (and believe me, I have zero clue which is most challenging, I just assume its Flatbed). But again, I'd take van, reefer etc... for the first leg anyway.

About my DMV.. I believe my last ticket was in 2011 but it was probably earlier than that, 2011 the latest. (Improper passing & less than 10 over) before that it was probably 2006.

OK. DMV record should fly ok.

TMC has a good reputation for a starter flatbed company. There's Melton also, but I'm not a fan of their driver-facing cameras. Western Express is there in Nashville, does flat/van, but is probably the least recommended company on here (second to CR England).

Most of the good companies do limited advertising for drivers if at all - they just don't need to. You're smart enough to get to work on some research in your area.

I always recommend my company for top company pay, but LTL is not everybody's cup of tea - so That's a question you have to ask - how long are you looking to stay in the industry, and what is your income expectation as a qualified clean driver after 2-3 years in.

Contact the companies and ask for pre-hire letters. What the pre-hire letter does is offer you a job if you complete CDL school, then complete the trucking company orientation. Orientation lasts 2-5 days with some classroom and driving test plus drug test. Successfully complete orientation and you're good to go.
