I've been a driver for two years now, the first year in manual trucks, the second in an auto. It's a 2013 Volvo (& it's all Volvo -- truck, motor, transmission). No problems with it whatsoever, whether backing, upgrades, downgrades, etc. On steep downgrades I simply put it in manual mode & shift it myself, if I so desire. As for starting out on a hill, it has a hill assistance that comes on automatically, & has never rolled back. However, if the hill is overly steep, I simply put my left foot on the brake & ease off as I accelerate if I'm concerned. And in stop-&-go traffic, I love the auto.

Drove both... prefer a manual but whatever I get, I'll make it work. First time with a brand new automatic truck, trying to back up a simple angle lot. It was embarrassing. Jerking too much, couldn't slow it down without jerking and backing too fast. Yard dog was watching me and ask if I needed help....

There's so many different AT in trucks anymore. Mine is in a mack pinnacle. I still have a clutch that is only used for starting and stopping.

From an efficiency standpoint, I hate torque converter automatics (slipping TC robs energy & even when locked-up, you still have heavier rotating assembly and a heavier total assembly).

From a simplicity standpoint, I dislike auto-shifts (more things to go wrong).

I dont hate auto trans in some one else truck there fine.

Once you get to a point where your actually a driver you dont even think about shifting its just something you do. Beside I shift smoother than the auto trans. With me its all about smooth rides.....

On slick surfaces I prefer to have the option of choosing the gears and the shift points.

My Z28 is a manual, my bikes are all manuals, my tractor is a manual. why would anyone think I did not like autos.

I think the hating of automatics is probably more a lack of having driven them for a few hundred thousand miles. I'm betting it is just like any other piece of equipment. It takes getting used to, but once you "have made friends with it," things go better.

I have to say though, that I don't even like the idea of an auto in a big truck.

Comes under the heading of "old dog," and "new tricks."

OTOH, if I hadn't spent years driving an old KW with the clutch from hell, I'd probably not blown out my knee...

If I still ran NYC regularly, an automatic would be preferred. No more constant shifting. I've driven an automatic when I ran Boston, NYC and Philly down into Baltimore and I loved it. Running out in the west, I don't think I would like it as much, I like having control coming down the passes.

Yes, and it's kind of all or nothing. Meaning if you're not careful you could slam hard into a dock.

My husband drove a 2005 Volvo condo that was an automatic. He loved it because it is easier on achy joints. It got good gas mileage and he had no problems going up and down hills. They only real problem was in places that were made for 48 ft trucks eons ago and it was so long it took a lot of work to get it into some docks in the northeast. It was really bad when the power steering went out on it. I don't really remember him slamming into docks with it either.
