What the stores SHOULD do is have a funnel or chute system leading to the registers kind of like some banks have. "Wait here for next available cashier".
It would solve a lot of problems. -
Yeah I understand this rule at Walmart DCs where you wait ine line and they call you forward. I had someone cut in front of me doing that and I got mad too since it was obvious and easy to figure out. If there were two short lines at the Flying J like almost everywhere everyday that would have made sense to me.

I am sure next time I will get behind the long line and 20 truckers will get in the short one lol.

The problems is the Pilot Flying J. No matter if you go in there at 2PM or 2AM it's the same problem, long lines. Even if I go inthere and no one is waiting to check out, the cashier is over at the coffee kiosk and I have to wait just as long as if there were one long line for 2 cashiers. Luckily they do have fuel receipts available at the shower kiosk deal. But if you want to buy some pizza, meatloaf (and the ensuing argument over ordering 3 sides when only 2 sides come with the meal), coffee or cash advance, I have to prepare to stand in line. What is interesting is when you have cashiers at opposite ends of the counter. So you see one line has 7 people and the other line has 1 person who is about to leave, it would be rude to cut out of line 4 people back to go over to that other cashier. However if you are vectoring in from another direction from inside the store, absolutely walk straight up to that cashier without waiting lol. Sometimes better to hang back and fake like you're looking at 3 for $20 movies lol.
