I am starting with a new company on the 4th of January hauling a refer and have never done this, what kind of stuff do I need to know that I did not have to know for Dry Van? Also other than the basic tools (wrenches, socket set, screwdrivers, vice grips etc...) what else should I have ready to go?
The basic driver supplies (atlas, gps, bed linens etc...) I have ready but refrigerated is a different world for me so please let me know any tip/tricks of the trade that a dry van guy might not know.
Thanks

Pulp thermometer. Always check the temp of the product before it goes on the trailer, cuz you will be held responsible for discrepancies at the other end. CYA is the name of the game
scottlav46 and jac714 Thank this. -
Forgive my ignorance but what is a "pulp thermometer"? I have a non-contact temperature "gun" but am not familiar with the pulp thermometer.

You fixin to be an owner operator or run company?
Just a couple things I'd make sure of. I'm sure I'm missin a few things but these are pretty mandatory for me.
Get yourself a super long jumper cable or a couple solid wires anyway so you can jump the tractor from the reefer if ya gotta. Comes in handy in obvious situations.
Don't ever get fuel without checking the level of your reefer tank! Super easy to let that go dry and then you got yourself a pain in the tuckas.
Battery operated leaf blower or at least the type of broom that you can easily sweep the trailer out with. The dry van push broom (at least MY dry van push broom) didn't work.
This is silly but make sure when you're in your trailer cleaning out you put your padlock thru the latch so some jag can't lock you in your trailer and turn on your cooler. Lotta funny guys in the world and ya get cold quick lolRookieJ1987, Al. Roper and mountaingote Thank this. -
Great Info thanks.
I especially like the idea of the lock, I am from Minnesota and enjoy the cold weather but being locked in a refrigerated box is not especially appealing.
I had already though about that with refer fuel, I am an old nuke submariner so I always plan for the worst and hope for the best.
What type of broom should I look for? I would think a standard "push broom" would work but my ignorance is pretty deep here.scottlav46 Thanks this. -
Shoot you're already ahead of the game then! You'll hear lots of complaints about reefer haulin, but honestly I prefer it. I think it's cuz one time my six year old daughter told her class 'my daddy helps feed the world' lol she makes it sound so noble that I'm haulin around 24 pallets of peppers
RookieJ1987, ChicagoDave, Al. Roper and 1 other person Thank this. -
I am looking forward to it, I have heard lots of good things about the company I am going to (Lessor's Inc) out of Eagan, MN. I kind of screwed up on my first OTR gig and have been driving local hauling RDF ((Refuse Derived Fuel) read ground up household trash) for the last few months trying to get back OTR.
Refer will be a whole new experience, new stuff to learn and new lanes to run.mountaingote and scottlav46 Thank this. -
Well good luck bro I'll keep any eye peeled for ya on the big road!

Coffee/Soda is on me if we run into each other.

I'm gonna hold you to that!
mountaingote Thanks this.
