Hey guys just wanted some input on this. So I picked up a dry van load of pallets of bagged sugar. 79k gross. Scaled at shipper then verified at cat scale. So I drive 400 miles and get pulled in a weigh station and they say my drive axles are 2k over!! I get a ticket and driver 10 miles down the interstate to another cat scale and sure enough it's 2k over. My question is...how? I was in a lot of stop and go traffic and had to use the jakes and brake alot but the load shifted about 2.5k from trailer to drives. Is that common? also fuel was at the same level. I'm just baffled...

If that happened to me I would be curious to look inside when I delivered the load to see exactly what happened.
A guess would be that the front pallet was a single in the center with two across behind that.
You braked REALLY hard and half of each pallet in that second row fell forward.
Probably a bunch of other pallets had bags go flying forward as well.
Not sure just how hard you would have to apply the brakes to do that, though.
Your troubles may not be over.
When the receiver sees it, it might me a real mess to clean up.okiedokie, Lepton1, FerrissWheel and 2 others Thank this. -
My guess would be you either slammed on the brakes some where in the stop and go traffic and you didn't realize it, also, the floor in trailer must be pretty slick.

What kind of bags, retailers bag or those rice looking bags? What was your cat scale at the first one? Shifting 2k is alot, I believe it's 2k each pallet? Meaning atleast 2 pallets been layover. But that's kinda impossible if they loaded it 2-1-2-1, atleast thr pallet in front had support...so idk open it up..... you much had slam it so hard the whole thing shifted.

If you verified at cat scale before that take it to court if the load didn't shift. However some customer sales are off, but you verified. However sometimes weight station scales are off too, such as in tennesee for a while I would be 32k on my tandems but it showed 35,400... Thinking I'm being pulled over Id get the green light. If the load didn't shift, call CAT md fight that ticket. If it did shift, well it's a lesson learned.

Bypass the scales every time.

After much thought I did stab the brakes pretty good once, making a left hand turn I got stuck in the left lane and had to brake to avoid taking out a sign pole...but i was only in 5th gear couldn't have been going more than 10-15 mph..

Just wondering if slamming on the brakes causing a weight shift is a common thing u have to be mindful of? Ever heard of it happening? I mean 2.5k for Christ's sake...

You can make things move that way, but you would have to be totally oblivious to not feel it when it happens. 2000lb is a lot of weight
demi Thanks this.
