Has anyone heard of the idea of running duals, say on the front drive axle and singles on the rear drive axle? Kind of a compromise between the two--. Main thing I'd be looking for is weight savings. Figure both axles single conventional wisdom says 400 pounds. Even 200 pounds off my tractor would be great.

400 lbs for aluminum SS VS aluminum doubles?

or 400 lbs for aluminum Super Singles Vs steel doubles?

I read the Alcoa web site claims 50lbs of weight savings per rim for Aluminum doubles VS steel doubles. They could be picking the worst steel rim used out there to compare against.

    Pretty cool.

So you save close to a 900 lbs over steel rims? plus a 100 for steer tires so a 1000 lbs.

From what I researched ahead of time:

~500 replacing 8 aluminum duals with al singles
    ~750 replacing 8 steel duals

And mine was right at 500 so I believe it...

I bought my truck at 460000 miles and put singles on.

I'm now at 719000 with the same singles

Only time I had an issue was last month on I88 being empty I started spinning going up hill

Been in heavy rain, snow and ice and never had problems with hydroplane or getting stuck before last month

Singles are fine with good tread. I would say that as with all tires, when the tread gets low then you might have problems with hydroplane

But I can say in mud, singles are bad LOL waste management in Colorado put singles on all their water trucks , a deal with CEOs between Michelin and WM. The WM trucks were getting stuck while dual trucks had no problems

Auto socks makes a sock for singles. I would trust a single chained or auto socked 1,000,000,000 times more in ice covered roads than duals

I switched to duals last month. I had two blowouts within 6 months and my fuel saving went to service calls. The second time wheel got trashed too, good thing I carried a spare.
