You're allowed an additional 400 lb APU exemption in all states except CA, DC, KY, NC and RI.

you would have to slide the 5th wheel forward to take weight off the drives and put it on the steers,if you slide it back as you suggest, you would put more weight on drives.

I have a question... How do take weight off the drives by putting more weight on the steers? I generally try not to move my fifth wheel. So I move it one notch to see how the weight changes on the drives and steers by re weighing the combined tractor trailer.

    Thanks

If in doubt go to the source and ask. Its a novel approach to get information. I was once close to 500 pounds over on my drives. I could not slide my 5th wheel. I also had no weight to give on my trailer tandems. I had to drive from just inside Tennessee about 35 miles from Bristol to Houston Texas and I was stuck because I had scaled at the Davey Crockett TA on I-81 in Tennessee and found out the shipper was closed up for the day. I did have an APU but decided to do some research during my 10 hour break. I got the telephone numbers for all of the state DOTs and called them and asked. I actually got a scale house in Louisiana. Tennessee told me they gave 1000 pounds before they issued a ticket. Mississippi told me they would most likely not write a ticket but said nothing about any grace weight allowed. I burned enough fuel to get legal before I got out of Mississippi, but the scale master told me they gave 2000 pounds. To this day I refuse to believe that. But I have often wondered. Like I said ask!
